I know this has been gone over alot, but I could not find an answer. I am going to paint my fathers dash black, in his 68 camaro. I want to use a spray gun, and I was wondering what the DuPont paint code was for the black for the dash. Also I heard you are supposed to use a flattening agentfor the front of the dash, can you tell me more about this ( how to use it, how much to add ). And do I use the same black for the top part or is it a different color? I know it should be flat black, and I saw that I should use a suede additive, how should this be done?
Thank you

Your local paint supply house can give you all the information you will need. They are usually glad to help.

Kyle, you mix up your black paint as normal then pour in the flattening agent. It's hard to say how much because I haven't been able to get consistence results with the stuff. I'd start with about 10% flattening agent and spray it on a test board. Wait till it drys and see how it looks. The dash is supposed to be really flat (dull)to kill the glare. Don't be suprised to have to add more to get what you want.
Hope this helps,
Roger

I have the numbers for 69 at home, but will not be there until next friday. Do a search. The Ditzler numbers were posted within the last two months.

Depending on how accurate you want to be, in 69, there was a flattener, a texturizer, and blue-green tint added to the paint. Not sure if 69 and 68 are the same.

Anyone know the codes for the non-reflective "suede finish" fopr the top of the dash at the windscreen? 68 and 69 should be the same??

Suede isnt made any more. And when your playing with flatteners, its a big experiment cause what the maunfactures say dont always work out. What I did find was Glasurit made/makes a pre- flattened clear. Its 20% gloss and works really good. graemlins/waving.gif

So is the suede just adding more flattener?

My local paint shop mixed up the original paint as I described it above. $50/quart. haven't painted it yet....next 2-3 weeks.

BTW, it's PPG paint, don't know about DuPont.

The Ditzler code for semi gloss is either 9266, or 9248. They're both listed as interior semi gloss black for 1968 Chevrolet. The "O" gloss suede for the upper dash is 9317.

DuPont lists only one semi gloss interior black, #88. Flat black is #4428.

no, suede was a paint that was made many years ago. DuPonts black stock # is 99. If your wanting to play with the flattener, make sure its shaken up real good, always use a strainer when pouring it in your clear.

pour some flattener in already activated clear, and pour enough in until it has a very hazy, yellow look to it(thats the best I can describe it). Spray some out on a test panel and wait till it drys to see how flat it is. If you want it flatter, add more, but if its to flat, you have to go thru the same process all over again. And I can tell you from experience, ther ratios that the tech lines give you are not correct.

OBTW, the actual part that your wanting to make flat should already be based out. graemlins/waving.gif

Regarding suede paint (PPG 9317) - it may not be available at all PPG distributors or in your area, but I know its available in San Diego - even in Lacquer! I bought some about 4 weeks ago and it provided the exact factory suede finish. So check around with other distributors/dealers if anyone is having problems finding it.
