I used to hang out at the one on Speedway Blvd in Tucson on cruise nights. Bought my first set of polised CenterLine Auto Drags (first polished set in town) 15x3.5 and 15x10 here. The manager was Carol Kaercher in which they (Carol and her husband Dave) let me help wrench on their 57 Chevy (Strip Teaser) a few times. And then delt with the store in Oxnard Ca on Saviers Blvd in the 90's while stationed at Pt. Mugu. They closed up shop when I moved to the San Jose area in the mid 90's.
TDW Nov 28th, 07, 05:29 PM At one time, there were 3 of them in this area. Now there isn't any kind of speed shops around for miles.
mkpatrick Nov 28th, 07, 07:39 PM We called them stupid shops around here.
Everytime you went in there, they made you feel like you should be lucky to be in their shop and they always attempted to sell you a t-shirt.
I just felt like they were a bit snide. It was probly just the shops up here. They closed years ago and haven't returned.
Rich69RS/SS Nov 29th, 07, 07:32 AM Mike they were called Stupid Shops in my area too of So Cal back in the day. They were mostly bling (shiny stuff) and what parts they did sell were way overpriced. If I needed anything I always went the Glendale Speed or Blair's Speed Shop.
I'll bet if you can get Vintage on here he can give you the history of SS form start to finish.

Employee #313 here. :) I was with them in the late 70's/early 80's. Managed the Sacramento store, then Albuquerque, and finally a floating manager in southern California.
When I was there they beat everyone on pricing, at least on the big ticket items like carbs, manifolds, headers, etc. They were more money on the smaller accessories that went with those items to help offset the lower priced big ticket items.
When I started 90% of our crew built and raced their cars and were very knowledgeable. But as the company expanded rapidly and all of us were promoted and moved around the country the sales force definitely suffered in my opinion. Cool place to work initially, though I hated the 6 day work week the managers had. Finally had enough and quit.

sspecialk Nov 29th, 07, 09:43 AM We had one here and it sort of followed the results you guys saw. I did buy a few odds and ends there but nothing significant. They did move lots of tires and wheels but I don't think hard core speed shop stuff was their core business. The local, well established, speed shops ran them out of town and some of those small guys still exist to this day, thank goodness. Anyway with Summit and Jeg's mail order Supershops would never have made it today for sure. I did like the look of the place though.
Arch Stanton Nov 29th, 07, 12:06 PM Yes, I bought an Erson cam, lifter, & spring kit & Headman header set a long time ago from the one in Phoenix, I think it was on Camelback Rd., near Central.
I bought a few things out of there, as I'm thinking more & more,
Stopped going there, as the attitude from them was like if I didn't have a big block, I wasn't worth anything or bothering with. Ticked me off.
I don't know of any local speed shops here in Vegas. I use a lot of Jegs & such, just trying to group all my purchases together so the handling/freight charge doesn't kill me. No sales tax either. Plus it's delivered to my door.
Kinda liked to wander the aisles of shops, so long as they don't give you any static as you are wandering.
nikkisdad Nov 29th, 07, 01:01 PM Salt Lake City had one, I also felt the superior complex around the store, especialy if you drove up in a junker. Funny how you are profiled by what you drive, the stuff in my garage would have made half of those guys to wet their pants. I remember buying two full sets of TA's & Centerlines from them one day, they were the cheapest, but I had to stoopervise the idiot mounting them. He scraped the first wheel, and I insisted on another. And of course with the early Centerlines, I had to break two back down to add silicone to the center seal. Still I kind of miss those shops, they were always fun to see the cool new stuff.
dawg Nov 29th, 07, 01:12 PM geez i still have the rims on my car that I bought from them

camaromaniac Nov 29th, 07, 01:19 PM Where can I meet up with the girl in boots?
Arch Stanton Nov 29th, 07, 01:42 PM Hey, they have some Flowmasters for kinda cheap right now. Hmmm.
68RS-SS Nov 29th, 07, 04:59 PM Employee #313 - you may have been the guy that my friend bought some wheels and tires from for his '68 Mustang Fastback in Albuquerque back in the late-80s. Wow, I totally fogot about those stores. I recall seeing them mostly as a wheel/tire and misc. chrome accessory type store. It was on San Mateo wasn't it? We still have a nice speedshop (not a chain) called Yearwood Speed & Custom (you may remember it on Eubank Blvd.) and they offer lots of stuff for same or not much higher than the big catalog outlets when you factor shipping. I hope they never close but am amazed this ma & pa shop has made it this far.
