: Question for you rack & pinion guys........
Kokamo Nov 28th, 07, 07:53 PM Well, I am going rack and pinion on my 69 along with an LS1/T56 swap. I am going to use the rack out of the donor car (99 Z-28) and use in on the 69.
I would like to buy the kit that a few places sell, but as a fabricator, I would like to try and tackle this myself without spending the cash. Yes, I know I need a few parts only they have/make, but I have connections for custom parts and peices myself that can be made on a CNC machine.
All I am wanting is a few pictures of the install. I am just curious as to how much notching has to be done to install the rack. Also, the mounting tabs. It's looks pretty strait forward, but I would like to get an idea before I start cutting away at my car.
Again, some pictures would be awesome. I have looked till I am blue in the face and it seems real hard to find any pictures of this done....from the front anyway. I found loads of info about the installs, but very few pictures.
Thanks for any help,
Joe
DonCasanova Nov 29th, 07, 05:02 PM Joe - I used a Unisteer manual rack on my 69 BB. Went well, but I had to fab one bracket.(check my posts).
I can e-mail you pics(hard to shoot decent pics with engine in car) if you'd like..............................DC

Don, thanks for your reply. I will check out your posts. I have PM's you my e-mail address.
Thanks,
Joe
69_OMEN_CAMARO Nov 29th, 07, 10:38 PM i was looking at the unisteer manual rack and pinion, is it smooth? is it like wrestling a bear to parallel park? thanx.................damian
DonCasanova Nov 30th, 07, 03:44 PM Joe - I'll try to e-mail you some pics(some were taken upside down, from inside, etc)
Damian - It actually handles way easier than I expected. The only time I have to crank it is when backing out of my garage. That's with a smallish 12.5" steering wheel too..........................DC
Kokamo Nov 30th, 07, 07:08 PM DC, thank you. I got your pictures. They look good and I understand the angle they were taken at. They have given me an idea of how I want to do it, but since it's a Unisteer unit, I don't think it will be the same as a stock unit from a late model F-body. Did you have to modify the subframe? Not by simply adding mounting brackets, but notching the frame to make room for the rack it'self?
Thanks,
Joe
BTW.....I like the one of your wheelie

Are you planning a front steer or rear steer?
with the rear steer you will use 3 u-joints and a mount to keep them in line(ie;Unisteer). On the front steer only 2 u-joints, but you will have to come up with your own steering arms(ie;BRP), as you cannot just flip the factory ones.
If you are indeed a fabricator, the front steer is really quite simple using the 98-02 LS1 rack(not a v-6 car).
I would highy suggest against purchasing BRP's kit. BRP's IDEA is great but their product/workmanship is a joke.

Kokamo Dec 1st, 07, 11:30 AM Chris, thank you for your reply. Can I ask about BRP's workmanship is bad? I have never dealt with them or thier product.
Thanks for the picture. Can I get you to take a pic of the notch you cut in the frame where the steering shaft connects to the rack?
Looks very good. Are you planning an an LS1 in there? I noticed you have done somthing to the frame for what looks like clearanced for an AC compressor.
Thanks again,
Joe
chrisp1 Dec 1st, 07, 01:14 PM First off, that frame is not mine, it's just some examples of what a front rack set-up will look like.
I, as you, am a "fabricator" also. So I am doing this myself from scratch.
Can I ask about BRP's workmanship is bad?
The short version:
I purchased their "kit", opened the box, started pulling out their parts, and when I got up off of the floor from laughing, looked at the parts again, vomited a little bit in my mouth, and then put everything back in the box and shipped it back.
Looks very good. Are you planning an an LS1 in there?
I might be a bit ahead of you as my 98 LS1 is in and running. Well, actually it's out of the car and on a stand, as I complete a 4th gen steering swap, the rack install, and new brake lines, and smoothing the firewall.
I noticed you have done something to the frame for what looks like clearanced for an AC compressor.
You are correct about the a/c. But I am not doing that on mine. I am using the Vette mounts to place my alt high and I will be mounting a sanden 508 up high on the passenger side. My alt would have hit the rack if I mounted it low, since I mounted my motor about 1'' from the firewall. BRP mounts the alt down low and mounts the engine really, really far forward. IMO, it looks very odd.

DonCasanova Dec 1st, 07, 02:57 PM Joe - No, I didn't have to touch the subframe at all. Making the frame mount for the 3/4" heim was the only place where I had to fabricate..............................DC
