im looking around for a new camera. costco has a couple of cameras in store. it is the rebel xti and the nikon d40. i have been doing a bit of research and im leaning towards the canon 40d. does anyone have any experience with the canon cameras or the nikon d40x? my budget for this would be around 1200-1500 which is the price for the canon 40d. is there a reason why i should get the canon rebel xti compared to the 40d? i used to be a avid hobbier in photo and took some classes years ago. i had the minolta maxxum 70000i 35 mm. and was happy with it but the digital age as aged the camera.

so, which should i get?

My wife is a pro photographer, and she shoots canon. Started with a D60 (now handed down to me) then a 20D then a 5D. They work real good. I really wish she'd let me use the 20d, it focuses a LOT faster than that ole D60.

I don't know anything about the current D40, but if it's anything like the 20d (Was a $1500 camera in it's day, without a lens) then it can't be beat.

i also looked at the 5d. i think it was about $2200 at costco. its a whooping 12.8 megapixels. it looks like a great camera but i think its more suited for pro photograpers. i think the 40d will be my choice

Stay away from the Nikon! Me and my brother and step mom all went out and bought Nikon's a couple of years ago and they were junk. We all went out last year and got new Cannons and they are awesome!

I've had 4 different Canon camera's for the family. All have been excellent.
I say go with Canon. Also had some Nikon's in our Det. Division. Canon's outperformed them.

Have you considered the Sony A100? I picked one up about 6 months ago and love it. The great thing about the A100 is that your old 35mm Minolta lenses will work on this body. The anti shake is in the body of the A100, not the lens like the Canon's. Even if you have to purchase a new lens, they are much cheaper because of that.

Good luck

jay im looking it up right now. i was comparing the a100 and the 40d. i sitll like the 6fps that the 40d offers while the a100 is at 3 fps.
