I am looking for replacement springs for my 69z28. Does anyone manufacture an original looking spring and how many leafs were standard? Mine has 5 leafs, but, may have been altered. I understand the originals were not painted. Second question is, should I look at having mine rearced? I understand rearced is having the main spring replaced. I would appreciate any help or comments. I am doing a total restoration on this car and am trying to keep it original.

I found some GM Restoration Parts rear springs for you at Classic Industries. From what the catalog states "Mono leafs are factoty 67 and base models 68-69, 4 leafs were exclusively on 68-69 Z28, 5 leafs were SS models." Hope this helps, someone might have replaced the 4 leafs with 5 leafs? Anyways parts numbers.
RL10 67-69 Mono coupe
RL11 67-69 Mono conv.
RL12 67-81 4 leaf all models
RL5 67-81 5 leaf all models.
Hope this helps you out some. I know its not "original" but should look very close. I bought my complete trunk pan from them and was very happy with there quality.
And Re-Arcing the springs is when they take the springs apart, heat them cherry red and rebend them.

5 leafs on a Z/28 is not real common, but did happen. It depended on what the computer picked for the options on the car. If the springs have square pockets for the plastic spacers they are original. I had my rear springs rearched. They were really just checked and maybe bumped a little. The spring shop just bumped the main leaf slightly with a press. It was a cold process. If done hot the springs must be quenced and tempered as well. That has been 4 years and all is fine. That is what I would do again.

Locatr a local forger...they will do as suggested as above, heating and quenching.
This is a very specialist job.

Eaton has all of GM's spring spec's if you want new OEM! (There's two Eaton's so get to the right place)..
And I DON'T think to this day, anybody is making OEM double-taped mono-leaf spring..

If they are that bad they need to be heated etc., then buy a new set from Heartbeat City. They make exact copes. Most likely they are not too bad. It is a common thing done by car restorers.

I have 69z I am restoring. It has 5 leaf springs which I'm not sure it is original. It would be interesting to see a pic of your springs. I have a pic of my springs off the car befor I had them painted.

I was talking to a craftsman guy who makes custom knives a few months ago
He has a world wide reputation and most of his stuff is hi end export.
We where talking about different steels and the steel in early cars springs..english American....20s thru 60s 70s etc..and he mentioned that the steel used in modern made springs is far less quaility than the stuff that was used even in late 60s American springs.
Then not long after than called in at the local forgers...concerning springs on another of my classics...again the comment was basically...get yor old springs reset the steel produced these days for springs is crap...u just cant get steel like produced up to the 70s anymore.
Food for thought???
