Back in the late 70's, I grew up in Taiwan(9th-11th grade). My father was responsible for the manufacturing of the Atari video games and lived there for 10 years.
The military personnel were allowed to bring a vehicle into the country and if they stayed 2 years, which was normal at the least. They could sell it duty free. Asian men loved the big American luxury 4 door sedan and the Asian women were rather fond of the blond haired, blue eyed American but thats a different story:D! The military guys would drive the car for 2 years and then sell it for 3 times what they paid for it!
Im sure the same was true for Japan. Im sure this guy totally regretted bringing a 2 door Camaro over there as far as his little windfall was concerned at the end of his tour.
