Hello everybody,
I did what I was support to do and came up with this old thread in the Tire and Wheel forum from Bill K with no answer, and I too have basically have the same type of question: http://www.camaros.net/forum/Forum8/HTML/000020.html
I just purchased 2- 2nd gen Z28 rims from a local OEM wheel vendor and would like to know what color they should be for use on a 73 Z28. Presently I have this same type of rim on the car, but they were painted the same color as the car, silver (Trim tag # A51, or 64, I think).
I have been told that having these rims “Powder Coated” would be better, and would last a bit longer.
What do you all think about this and how can I get the powder coat color to match? I have a vendor that does a what I think is a very good job of cleaning (sand blasting) and powder coating, and is ok with stock colors, but I don’t know about custom colors. I found on another web site the Ditzler paint # DDL-32961 was used with a roughing agent was used (I think this is gray / silver in color).
Do you think that this color could be matched with a power coat type of mix?

I dont know what you want to match but if you are doing all the wheels on one car then dont worry about match. As someone who has painted everything. Believe me match does not meen much unless you want to do just one wheel. If its a set then it would be a matter of what is best or what is afforable. If you choose to paint then make sure that the primer gets into the seems of the rims if you sandblast them. Ive seen some good spray jobs bleed rust because blasting can
get to places paint cant. As far as powdercoat goes, I cant speak; but what I've seen this might be the way to go, Ive seen some beutiful wo0rk, but I cant say how yours would turn out. Hope I've helped have fun.

O.K. I see what you are saying and my original post did not tell the complete story. The 2 rims that I picked up are to replace at least 1-maybe 2 bad rims and then I plan on doing the same to the remaining good rims. When I had new tires installed a while ago, the tire shop noticed a stress crack near some of the lug holes on 1 rim and I have always had a leak in another tire / rim combination (old tires, new tires new valve stem – on nails / holes- always the same). As for just replacing the 2 rims alone you are correct, just get the paint matched and get them painted well and be on my way. But I found that most of the 70 - 73 Z28 rims were gray or black with the rough finish and since I’m changing 2 of the rims, way not go back to a stock type of finish using a powder coat method. I do respect your back round in collision repair and if any body would know paint and quality finishing, it would be someone in your field, but wouldn’t powder coating be much superior?
