I am going to get my Body Dipped this week and they say that it might eat the trim tag. Will it? Also if it will how should I remove it without damaging it and where can I get the correct fasteners to replace it.
Thanks

I removed mine on my '70 for the same concerns as you. The acid may not eat the trim tag but it will definitely remove the caulking in the rivets. It will also remove any rust behind the trim tag which may cause the trim tag to fall off. The rivets are available as a GM Restioration part on E-bay. To remove the trim tag without damage, remove the caulking from the rivets and then remove the rivets from behind the firewall by crushing them and then pushing them out. Do not try and pull the trim tag off from the engine side!

Thanks for the info with GM Resto --- How did you remove your trim tag without dammaging it?

Like I said, just pop the rivets out from the inside and the trim tag will fall off.

Thanks and sorry for making you repeat info --- the first time I looked at your post it did not have the removal info. Sorry and thanks for the info.

No prob. One more thing - you might want to take a picture of the trim tag on the car before you remove it. That way you have documented the fact that it is the original one. Good luck!

Or do what some of my friends have done and video the removal of the tag, while the video camera is running...explain why you are doing it:beers:...kind of sad what the hobby has turned into...but, oh well.

The chemical solution will eat aluminum per the dippers and since the trim tag is aluminum, you will not have a good tag left when it comes out. The vin tag is steel and will not be harmed.
Factory trim tag rivets are pushed in and crushed, you have to get behind the rivet and peel the remains (small tabs) off of the firewall from the back side. Once the tabs are free, you can gently pull the rivets out of the tag from the engine side and the tag is free.

Aren't the VIN tag rivets aluminium as well?
