I have what I think is a 69 RS Camaro but need some help to positivly ID. The original engine has been long gone.
It has the 1 inch groumet hole in the fire wall but no groumet.
It has 2 fuel lines to the gas tank
Backup lights appear to be original not aftermarket

Does anyone know of a sure way to ID it as a 69 RS?

Welcome to Team Camaro Gary!

For the RS cues read this thread, post #6 and maybe more.

You probably want to post all your trim tag data. If your car is an early build small block car, it could be an LM1 or L48. If it's late enough, it could only be an L48.

One way is if the squirter for the headlight washers is mounted on the top of the wiper motor.:)

I believe the head light switch is different. There are two hoses attached to it that go throughtn the fire wall.

Eric gave you the best way to tell an RS from that post #6. I copied it here for you:

RS's will always have hidden headlights with electric (67) or vacuum operated (68 and 69) doors infront of the headlights. Backup lights are below the bumper in all three years. if you can pull the backup lights look for a stamped opening (nice clean sharp edge) vs looking like they were cutout with a cutting wheel or saw. The opening is only in the outer tailpan, not through the inner panel. 69 RS's have a headlight washer system, and have a different wiper motor than non RS Camaros. The wiper part number stamped on the motor housing ends in 605. The 68 and 69 RS's have a 1" stamped hole (not drilled) in the firewall outboard of the brake booster (or master cylinder if manual brakes) for the two vacuum hoses connected to the light switch. The light switch in 68 and 69's are different, and have a vacuum slider valve attached to the bottom (opposite the elctrical connections) of the switch. The windsheild washer bottle in 68 and 69 RS's are mounted on the passenger side inner fenderwell instead of the drivers side radiator support. All RS's have style trim (RPOZ21) as part of the RS option, so they will always have wheelwell chrome, gutter chrome, tail light chrome trim, quarterpanel gills (in 69) and have the lower portion of the rocker painted black (in 69) below the chrome trim strip.

The headlight washing system is a pair of chrome nozzels on the upper valence in front of each headlight that spray washer fluid on the headlight when the wiper switch is held over to the left. The extra solenoid on top of the wiper motor is then activated to send fluid to the nozzels. :)

Here, look for this stuff on the firewall;

Here's a closeup of the headlight washer pump;

You can just see the four chrome washer nozzles above the headlight doors;

Jim, at the bottom of your excellent post you mention that the headlight pump is activated by holding the dash switch to the left. As I recall, mine works by turning on the wipers, then pushing and holding-in the wiper switch. But it's been nearly 35 years since I did so.;) Maybe that's just for the windshield wash.:confused: I'm going to read my owners manual. Nope, never read it before.:noway:

I would agree, the headlight washers work when you push in on the wiper lever for a longer amount of time, then it activates the pump to the headlights. Thats how mine works.

Mike, I still remember the exact spot that I saw my first 67 Z28 (local Sears parking lot). It was metalic blue. I thought 'neat' and couldn't stop checking it out. That was in late 67.

I also went thru this on my 69 Z2/8 to confirm it was a real R/S. its a X33 D80 car -on the trim tag X33 was part of the trim in the R/S - when I bought my car it had been stripped of so much stuff it wasnt funny. on a 69 R/S theres a hole on the trunk left side by the bumper for the backup lights wiring to pass thru (maybe both sides been so long since I did this I dont remember) an non R/S wouldnt have this - mine did. this and the trim tag was my most conclusive proof mine was a R/S. please correct me if im wrong . I bought my car back in 1987 when my other car was wrecked-was going to re-body it but decided to fix the other car a fathom green R/S Z with orig cowl hood and endura bumper - and like a dummy I sold it (only paid 450$ for it when I bought it in '78) any way hope this R/S info helps you.
