The original front dash speaker is a 4x10

If you are putting in a modern am/fm/cd, either in the radio hole, or hidden somewhere like in the glove box, you might consider a unit that contains two 4" or so in the 4x10 space. You can buy them premade, or you can make your own, which is what I did. I made a board to hold two 4-1/2" 3 ways. To disguise it, I took my original speaker, and cut away everything but the perimeter lip, and enough extra to fasten to the speaker board. I reinstalled the rubber molding on the lip and covered the whole thing with speaker cloth, Now when you look through the windshield at the speaker, you cannot tell it is actually 2 speakers.

Mine is a 69, and I did not try to reuse the speaker bracket, as it was too flimsy for the heavier speakers. I rigged up a brace that hooked through a hole in the front of the dash and then fastened to the original speaker attachment stud. The front "hook" is hidden by the dash pad.
