View Full Version : Garage remodeling! (lotsa pics!)
JimM Dec 8th, 07, 08:46 PM For the past 2 or was it 3 weeks, I've been working my tail off.
My babies now have a VERY nice place to sleep!
This all started when I felt a need to secure "my space." Our attached garage is 22 by 50, and has always been one wide open space.
Well, I built a wall across the middle, and now, it's "Mine" and "theirs"!

Then I painted the whole thing with a fresh coat of white paint.
After a serious cleaning, I repainted my old tan metal cabinets in rustoleum "hammered" paint, black and silver. I layed down thick clear plastic carpet runner to line the shelves, and attached hardware bins to the insides of the doors.
This:

turned into this:

and this:

I moved my workbench from the side to the new front wall, and cleaned it up a bit.

And finally, I laid down 550 square feet of "motoFloor" from Costco. That floor is fantastic!
My poor Vette was evicted to the driveway through most of this, and with the recent snows, had become quite the "Vettesicle." The Camaro even had to spend most of today outside while I finished the floor, but thankfully mother nature was cooperative and the forecast freezing rain didn't happen.
Here's my baby's back in thier new home:

It's been a couple hours now, and the vette has thawed.

Looking good Jim.
And I see which baby you love more to. You know you really shouldn't play favorites though they may get jealous, and nest thing you know there's oil on the floor.;)
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Dec 8th, 07, 10:26 PM Nice job!, Looks nice!
wagonman Dec 9th, 07, 12:33 AM beautiful!!!
how do you like that floor?
cost?
can you drag a floor jack, cherry picker and engine stand across it?
JimM Dec 9th, 07, 05:36 AM The floor is great, I like it a lot. They say no problem with jack's and engine stands and such, the toolbox rolls on it with no problem. It is a lil noisy, plastic sitting on concrete ya know, it "clanks" a lil when you walk on it.
I "struggled" with that one a lot. Concrete is 6 years old, and I've never been able to make the vert stop leaking, so there's some pretty bad stains. I just couldn't bring myself to trust any kind of paint to stay put, and nothing looks worse than chipping and peeling 5 year old paint.
Cost to my door for 12 48 square foot boxes plus a completer kit (the "ramp" peices for at the garage door) was $1530, just a touch under $3 per sq ft. It was dropped shipped from Race Deck, and my research showed the products are the same stuff. There are "lines" molded into it, kinda like diamond plate, they keep i from getting slippery when wet.
Other than some paint, It's the only money I spent on this project.

SixtyAte Dec 9th, 07, 06:59 AM Jim...
Nice job... Same theme as mine..white, black and gray/silver :) The cabs came out great and the floor is top-notch! Its well worth the effort and cost knowing you have your space and nobody else can get there without your permission. I am not doing the floor this year..but it will happen in the early spring ...expoxy not tiles tho....but if you want to package the ones you have down and send them here, I would be forever grateful :D
Hey, don't point that sore finger at me :boxing:

jackr Dec 9th, 07, 11:29 AM The garage looks great. I am planning to do something with mine real soon.
The excessive wax buildup on that corvette might have to be your next project.
Mav68erick Dec 9th, 07, 01:52 PM Was that a Circle drive? Drive thru garage theres doors on both ends?
JimM Dec 9th, 07, 02:59 PM Was that a Circle drive? Drive thru garage theres doors on both ends?
It used to be before I put up the wall.
No circle drive though, corner lot, driveway on both streets.
Havin' Fun Dec 9th, 07, 07:46 PM Jim,
Nice job. Looks great.
A question on the floor.
Do you think it has the potential for fluids to seep between the crevices?
clwilcox33 Dec 9th, 07, 07:53 PM That's a damn fine looking garage now Jim!! I like the work you do man.
JimM Dec 10th, 07, 05:52 AM Jim,
Do you think it has the potential for fluids to seep between the crevices?
Absolutely, and on purpose, too. Drain slots built in between the tiles, and raised ribs where it sits on the concrete. They claim you can just hose it down, and anything under it will just "flo-thru."
dcordle Dec 10th, 07, 06:18 AM I like it Jim. Looks nice. -Dave
dbx1969 Dec 10th, 07, 07:07 AM Great Job, Jim! Now you have that showroom look.
Everett#2390 Dec 10th, 07, 07:21 AM Very nice, Jim. Motion detectors going up?
JimM Dec 10th, 07, 08:06 AM Very nice, Jim. Motion detectors going up?
Motion detector, window switches, and switches on both doors been on for a couple weeks.
Yankit Dec 10th, 07, 10:03 PM Jim, Thats a great looking shop/garage/home!! Whats the size of the area you did the flooring tile on?? The checkered flooring really sets it off, now all you need a brass pole and some black lighting-no mirror ball though, that would be just goddy to over the top......Keep up the Good Work!
68RS-SS Dec 11th, 07, 05:01 PM Very nice Jim!! What a great sanctuary to have. Question - how much do you think your garage door weighs? I have a smilar looking door that I estimate weighs around 500lbs. The reason I bring it up is cause I don't trust those chinsy rails and mounting systems (with my baby right below) so I reinforced the rails with some steel channel and used heavy gauge angle iron vs. that flimsy angle stuff with all the holes that typical doors are held up with. I mounted the angle iron to reinforced joists above as well and basically added "double-protection" everywhere I could. Just thought I'd mention cause If you have a heavy door like I do all it takes is one of those chinsy parts to fail and ......well I don't even want to think about it but you know what I mean. I think that chinsy stuff works fine on the lightweight or single doors but I personally don't trust on a 16' side solid core door so thought I'd bring it up for you to think about. I have to go but will try and remember to post some pics tomorrow as an idea to consider to add some protecton.
JimM Dec 11th, 07, 05:38 PM Tim, it's just about 550 square feet, measures 22 wide by 25 long.
Bill, I don't think I've ever heard ov an overhead garage door coming loose?
The supports are screwed into the joists, with big long lag bolts. Door is pretty light, had to replace a section once. It's steel with foam core. I hate it, doesn't match the house at all, but it insulates a lot better than the solid cedar doors I wish I had.

If yours is foam-centered, then not to worry. Mine is a beast and in addition, the exterior is cedar so I felt compelled to "over-build" the support system for the rails and hangers. I'm not worried about a bolt loosening as much as I am a bracket or rail just giving out suddenly with my door that weighs easily over 500-600lbs. That's just how I am though, I think of what can potentially happen that's negative and then go over-board on making sure it never does. I'm the "safety patrol guy" around my house and my wife and daughter think I'm a little over-board sometimes with my turning off water and power before we go on vacation, and always asking if they turned their dang hair-straightener devices off, lowered the heat, etc. so that's just how I am. Enjoy your garage!!
GMJoe Dec 13th, 07, 02:30 PM Jim, i love the way the floor finishes every thing off, if you could let us know how well it holds up to floor jacks and jack stands and stains.
I need to do some thing with mine come spring.

If you need a lil more, let me know. I've got 1 open box left over, perhaps 40 tiles in it.
wagonman Dec 14th, 07, 10:37 PM If you need a lil more, let me know. I've got 1 open box left over, perhaps 40 tiles in it.
thanks jim....your offer is awsome!!!!
dont give them away!!!!!!
you may need them for future stains or repairs!!!!
i just received my order today......i ordered black/white..
when i received them they came together in groups of four....all four white and all four black.
so i had to completely disasemble them ..............i bet you had to do the same thing......
i may get a finish kit!!!!!!!!!
JimM Dec 15th, 07, 05:43 AM yup. same here, I think that's what took the longest. I got this big ole "bent screwdriver" don't recall what I bought it for, but it popped em apart real easy.
I figured I'd keep a few tiles for spares, the rest are available for half cost plus shipping if you need them John.
Did you get a "completer kit" ot two? comes with 12 tiles for some reason, and 20 narrow angle peices to finish any edges.
JimM Dec 15th, 07, 07:25 AM wish I knew for sure what's on santa's sliegh...
There is just no hope for the toolbox... not enough box, too many tools.
BonzoHansen Dec 15th, 07, 07:58 AM No kegerator?
