View Full Version : 68 SS 396 4 speed
67speedfreak Dec 13th, 07, 03:45 PM Hey guys,
I just picked up what I believe to be a 68 SS396 4 Speed vert.
I know it is hard to verify this on a 68.
It is just a roller and I have no drivetrain.
It has a tictoc tach and SS emblems. Multileafs.
Power drum brakes.
Car was originaly Maroon and the tail light panel is painted black under the blue repaint.
I will post pics tonight.
Just wondering what tell tale signs to look for to verify the car.
Either way it will be a cool ride.
Thanks,
Brian

Everett#2390 Dec 13th, 07, 06:48 PM OE BBC will have heater core nipples above the frame, center of heater box, rather than next to bellhousing opening. Unless car has A/C, then heater hoses are to the pass side of A/C evap core.
Pass side BBC engine mount is lower in height compared to drvr side mount.
Trans crossmember will have bolt slots towards pass side.
May have P/S, always a plus with BBC.
Radiator support may have rubber stripping across the top to aid in reduction of recirculating hot air, seals against hood.

98blackburb Dec 16th, 07, 01:18 PM Brian, checkout the tachometer readings in this link.............looks to be a Big Block car you have there 5.5-7 RPM

reevesd Dec 20th, 07, 06:43 PM Congratulations, looks like you got a real SS396. The tach says it is either a 325 or 350 hp, not 375 hp.(5500 red line). Black tail sail says it was a BB car too. Lots of work ahead, but it will be great when you get it all back together. Good luck.:hurray:
RPOL72 Dec 20th, 07, 07:15 PM Spoke to the owner when it was on Ebay earlier this year. Nice find, wish I would have driven the 30 minutes to look at it before it sold!
nantuckett 67 Dec 20th, 07, 09:04 PM and to think someone let it get in this condition to begin with...I'm sure she's happy with an owner that gives a shoot that reminds me I've got to pull mine back into the garage...
67speedfreak Dec 20th, 07, 10:45 PM Thanks guys ,
I can't wait to get started on her.
I am building this one for my girl friend to drive.
When I bought it I didn't even have clue what it was I just knew it was a vert. Just saw some bad pics and took a chance. :D
Everett#2390 Dec 21st, 07, 04:59 AM Of course, you're gonna make an album on her? Maybe a name?
Quite the project in front of you, I wish you well.
Keep us informed with pics once in a while.
Budget made?
