View Full Version : Deluxe door handle fitment issue?
RSDannyG Dec 16th, 07, 11:40 AM First of all I am working with repro doors, deluxe door panels and door handle mechanisms.
Once installed the door handle at the bottom appears to be too close to the door panel. Is this how the originals were? It even looks off when mounted with no door panel. I can't see any adjustment possibilities with the handle or handle mechanism.
Thanks,

I have to check my originals but don't remember seeing them that way. Iys almost like they are mounted to the wrong mount :(

X33D80 Dec 17th, 07, 02:59 PM It does look like something is strange here, like they are mounted onto the wrong door or backwards or something. Here is what they should look like after assembly with the door panel.
Helmut D Dec 17th, 07, 03:46 PM It looks like you have the left on the right and the right on the left.
98blackburb Dec 17th, 07, 04:40 PM Agree, done that before and it looked like that picture.............
RSDannyG Dec 17th, 07, 05:22 PM Guys,
After seeing your posts I thought I would be the candidate for "Dufus of the Week" by installing them on the wrong doors. I went back and checked. When I put the left one on the right door the opening mechanism is backwards, ie I would have to push the handle in to open the door. I looked at both mechanisms and they are the mirror image of each other, ie one is not bent more than the other. I did the same with the handles and they are the same also. Doors are not bent. Of the 5 bolt holes the mechanism will only fit one way using 3 of the holes and when pulling the handle inward the lever pulls the rod forward opening the door like it should.
Really stumped on this. Would have preferred to have been a Dufus installing them backwards. I'll see if I can find an original door to try these on. If it still does not work then it is either the mechanisms or the handles.
X33D80 Dec 17th, 07, 06:17 PM Could we have a photo of the installed handle from straight ahead? I am scratching my head too.

Not sure which "straight ahead" photo you want. Here are some. Let me know if there is another angle you want to see.
No 1 photo is looking down-see how far in towards the door the bottom of the handle is.
No 2 fron the front looking towards the rear of the door. You can really tell how skewed the handle is.
No 3 at the rear of the door looking forward.
No 4 straight in at the mechanism only
No 5 stlightly rearward of the handle
No 6 note bottom of handle tilted in towards the door.
Thanks,

Mine are like the pic from Andrew. Yours look like the handle is mounted upside-down on the handle mount. Mount them the other way and reverse sides or whatever is needed to have them face the proper way. Its clear that the angle of the bracket mounting area for the handle is wrong.

SixtyAte Dec 18th, 07, 04:02 AM Hey...
They are mounted 90 degrees off! The arm from the handle comes down from north to south not west to east ! Look at Andrews pic...see the chrome part of the arm ......

Kev,
Thanks for the photo. Now I know I am not insane! I have duplicated your setup on my passenger door. Only one of the mechanisms fits with the spring towards the rear of the door. And, only one of the door handles fits with the handle pointing towards the front of the door so my setup is the same as yours. Now, see the photos below. Same #$%@ problem! The handle does not sit parallel to the door. The bottom is too far in towards the door.
The handles and/or the mechanisms must be wrong. I can't see any other possibility.
Guess I'll have my vendor send me new sets to compare to these.
Thanks again,
X33D80 Dec 18th, 07, 05:01 PM Actually the handle itself doesn't look right. You can see a difference between yours and Kev's handles. Is this for a '68 or '69 model car? I don't know that it matters, but it might.

It is for a '68. Vendor catalogs show the same part for 68 and 69.
