I read how to get the back of the seat out, but how do you get the lower seat out

The lower seat is hooked in there....Push the lower seat in (forward) slightly while lifting it up till it releases from the hooks on each side.

by forward he means towards the rear of the car...

There's a gap between the front bottom of the seat and the floor, so you can stick your fingers in there and find the hook brackets. That will tell you where to push aftward as you lift up.

I use to sit on the seat and try pushing down, then pushing back and then pulling up, but that didn't work very well. Then I tried kneeling outside the car, pushing down on one side as I used a small pry tool to push it back. Once I got it down and around the J hook, it would come right out. (Repeat other side). The first time I tried it took maybe 30 minutes, now I can do it in 2 minutes or less. Kinda reminds my of my early days working with a bra! Charlie 69 RS

Here's a couple of pics to help give an idea of how the seat bottom is hooked, and help visualize how to get it out in 30 seconds or less every time...:)

There is a hook like this on each side (coupe owners, you won't have the squared off reinforcement plate in foreground, mine is a vert)

Here's the hook from the side. The way it is shaped, you need to push the front of the seat down and back an inch, then pull up and forward. If your hooks have not been mangled over the years, you should be able to kneel on the floor straddling the tunnel, put one hand out wide on each side, and then push back and down and lift up in one motion.

This topic should probably be turned into a 'sticky', since it gets asked so frequently. A search will yield a whole bunch of previous posts.

I never did learn to un-snap a back seat with one hand. :)

There's not as much payoff getting the back seat freed up....;)

Hello, found this thread doing a search and was wondering about the back potion of the rear seat. Does the lower seat portion have to come out first in order to take out the back portion or can the back of the rear seat be removed without taking the lower part out. I searched a bunch of threads and none of them mention the back part of the rear seat. Reason I am asking is because I just got a new set of seat belts that i need to put in and it looks like they bolt behind the back portion of the rear seat. thanks for the help

Sean -

You do have to have the seat bottom out to get to the two screws securing the rear seat back. After you have the seat bottom out, but before you remove the seat back, you may want to try to reach the seat belt anchors first. They are a little behind the seat back, depending on the angle you look for them, but if you throw a bright light under the rear axle shining up and forward, you may see the holes well enough to bolt the belts in.

Eric, thanks for the reply. That helps alot. I will give the light trick a try, but is the back portion that difficult to remove? Is it just a few bolts holding it on or does the the package tray and other stuff have to be removed too in order to get the back out? Thanks again, i got to get one of those assembly manuals soon!

Assembly manual won't help; Fisher Body put the seats in. The Fisher Body Manual doesn't have much on seats either....

No, the rear seat back isn't a big deal to pull out, except that you'll have to take it all the way out so it is out of the way (we vert guys can just lay it on the folded top...). Once the two screws holding the bottom of the back are removed, it just lifts straight up (at the angle of the seatback) to get it off the three hooks it sits in up top.

A couple things you'll find;
At the top of the first picture you can see the bottom of the passenger side of the backseat in its position in front of the wheel well. There is a bracket thats part of the wire frame. One on each side of the bottom. It fits over a sheet metal tab that is part of the body. The tab is bent to one side to hold the seat-back in place. Then the two bolts on either side of the tunnel are installed. You'll see.

After you remove/bend them, the seat-back lifts up and out;

If you're really lucky, when you remove the cardboard (assuming it's still installed) you could find THIS;:hurray:
