Any advice on what grit disc's? 1969ss Dec 22nd, 07, 05:59 PM It probably wouldn't hurt for you to look at my website, not on how to put floor pans in, but scattered through out it, are pictures of different tools, like a die grinder and a roloc attachment, a powered hacksaw, clecos, small welding clamps, just a bunch of stuff and different types of cutters and such. Anyway if your up for it, its (under floor pans), 7 or 8 sections. Rob no69x-44 Dec 22nd, 07, 06:12 PM I want to buy some sanding disc's for my die grinder to smooth out my horrible welds (hey at least I'm trying). Any advice on what grit disc's? If they are particular heavy on the welds, I would go with a 60 grit disk .... certainly no more then a 40. Start with the 60 and see how that does. I'm betting it will be fine. Just be careful that you are only grinding down the welds. Norcoastal Dec 22nd, 07, 06:41 PM Thanks for the advice, I ordered the disc's. Rob, I checked out your site. Man that's a lot of work. JimM Dec 22nd, 07, 07:38 PM I tried the disks.... then I went to menards and bought a 6" angle grinder. That bad boy will lay a weld flat and smooth in a few seconds. With the =thin wheels, it will cut, too. Sid69Z's Dec 22nd, 07, 07:53 PM I used an angle grinder as well to flatten, then smoothed them up a little with a cut off wheel on a die grinder. go2fast Dec 22nd, 07, 10:06 PM Try a flap disk on your angle grinder. They cut great, last forever, and generate less heat. 1969ss Dec 23rd, 07, 03:40 AM Thanks for the advice, I ordered the disc's. Rob, I checked out your site. Man that's a lot of work. Steven, it looks like a lot of work, but I've been retired close to four years, and its my hobby monkey diddling with stuff like this, keeps an old guy busy.:) But, I have to tip my hat off to you, asking the questions up front, thats the smart way to do it. Body work really interests me, so I check 7 or 8 car forums several times a day, (body shop sections) mostly. A lot of professional body men on these forums that are willing to help us hobbists out, then you never know what some amateur might stumble on to late some evening out in his garage. Anyway, thats the deal on this old guy. I'll copy and paste the three or four forums that I seem to get the most information off from, bookmark them, and once you get into it, you can check them out, probably in less then ten minutes each day if you have the time. Most of the people on these forums have jobs and families and very little time if any to research, but I really believe, ten minutes spent on a good body shop type thread, is the equivelant to at least an hour saved in actually doing it for a guy just starting out. Enough of this blah, blah, blah from me, I'll get those forums up here for you. http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/body-exterior/ http://www.chevelles.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=12 http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=417 Rob Norcoastal Dec 23rd, 07, 07:46 AM Thanks Rob, I wish I had more time to work on my car (3 kids, wife and job), this is my first restoration and my first attempt at welding. I am passionate about Camaro's (my first car was at 67 Camaro that I paid $600 for in 1975 when I was 16) and I'm having a blast at doing the work. Sometimes it's a little intimidating, but that's the fun, trying something new. I'm in no hurry, I don't have any deadlines. Thanks for the forums. Steve 1969ss Dec 23rd, 07, 08:03 AM Your welcome. Rob HarleyD67 Dec 23rd, 07, 10:23 AM Home depot has a 4 1/2" angle grinder for $19.00. To smooth them out the flap wheels cut pretty fast and don't gouge like a grinding disk. To cut them down start with 40 or 60 grit, and finish off with 80grit.http://www.northerntool.com/images/product/images/1599987_lg.gif (javascript:showhide('moreimages');) They have them for 2" and 3" die grinder attatchments as well the last longer and don't glog up. |
