Hi Guy's I am assuming we are all car nuts here and we must all have some place to keep them and work on them. I'm in the middle of building a new garage and I know some of you must have some really great and inventive ideas, Anyone care to share pics and ideas?

Cabinets are Rubbermaid. Pretty sturdy and cleanup is easy. Of coarse you need TV, stereo, fridge, microwave, & AC.

Cant wait to make the move to new home next year with 4 seperate garages. Barn for parts and shells, heated-insulated for working on them, heated attached for daily drivers and single for junk :D

This is where it sits all winter now. Current garage is standard looking double door but inside it makes a dogleg to the right with another 1.5 space for car or boat or more junk.

Well here is the outside of mine. I made it two stories so i could have a lift in there and also have lots of storage space upstairs. I would show you pics of the inside but its rather embarassing at the moment. Im in the middle of redesigining the inside and its a horrific mess..so bad that i wonder if i will ever have time to get it done. Heat, A/C, water w/hot water tank, floor drains, big utility sink.. just some of the things i have in mine that im glad i do.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the pics and good luck with the move. We have chatted before you helped me to determine that my RS is "most likely" a LM1 car or at least has all the tell tell clues of being one. My car was also White with Black Top originally now she is Black with out the Vinyl Top. I've noticed that most of the RS LM1 cars were White with Black , You ever noticed that? Anyway as I don't have the original engine this one is coming back to life this time as a 427/425 700R4 car with 12 bolt and 373 gears.

Thanks for your help both times. Merry Christmas to you.

Well I wish I had some of the outside but will attach what I have. I built my own garage (24 x 24) and still have a few items left to complete. Here's a few ideas I have to share:

1. I scored some 4' x 4' sections of bullet proof glass from a salvage yard - if you get mad and throw a wrench it won't even ding it and make it harder for people to brake in.
2. If a framed bldg. with a pitched roof then consider scissor trusses cause they give you a lot more ceiling height.
3. Metal roofs - these are great but make sure to tie yourself to something when installing them cause they get slick when temp goes below 75 degrees.
4. Put in lots of rebar and bolts to mount the walls in the foundation. I went over-board but it's cheap so why not.
5. Get various bids on the foundation work as it will vary quite a large amount and ask them all to spec what they think is code/appropriate and compare them.
6. I used a high-density exterior siding board vs. drywall on the interior and like it cause it doesn't require tape/texture and is more sturdy than drywall. Costs more for material but saves a lot of work in the long run and is a better product I screwed each piece in and can be easily removed if I want to change electrical or whatever.
7. Put in lots of outlets now while it's easy. Leave some extra power available up in the ceiling for ventilation fans or whatever later you may add.
8. Use 2 x 6 lumber and insulate well.
9. After you prepare your budget add 20% for all the little stuff you forgot.

Me Jim?
She has "her" garage, where she gets to keep her trailblazer and various peices of lawn and garden equipment.

Last weekend, I did intake gaskets on an 03 malibu in there. It's kinda nice to be able to find my tools, and it all cleans up real nice and easy!

Next weekend, intake gaskets on the vette, I'm on a mission to cure all leaks!

Then the motor comes out of the Camaro, a lil bird told me my AFR195's have shipped! :hurray::hurray:

I'll just repost the last thread on the garage I built for mine. Linked here. (http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=84315) It will never be 100% I suppose, I'm always doing things and adding things to it. This was posted back in August 07. I don't have any recent shots of the interior. If you want to see all the shots I took while building it, click here. (http://www.67rs-ss.com/garage/garage.htm) (Ignore the pics of the fence below, others were making fun of my old falling down fence in the other post so I had to show shots of the new one in that post)

Just wanted to sort of finalize this thread. The Garage exterior is 99.5% done. Once I got past the final inspection I had to move on to other projects, like getting my back yard re-enclosed with a new fence; not to mention other honey-doo projects that have been pretty time consuming. I also take at least a month off in the summer from projects to spend the summer with my son that comes to visit each summer for the month or so.

This first shot shows the side facing the house, and you can see between the ends, the door, and window, where Betty has planted 3 climbing rose bushes. I still have to put up some kind of nice trellis (sp) for them.

http://www.67rs-ss.com/garage/done/garage27.jpg

I said 99.5% done, because I still have to finish the sofits and eaves, put some outside sconce lighting on each side of the large garage door. Here's the rest of the pics, and a few of the new fence I built. Those of you that made fun of my falling down fence will be happy to see how my new one turned out. I still have a little staining to do on the inside, and to finish the slats on one corner of the house where we extended the fence out a little.

The interior still needs to be completely finished out, including insulation, my AC unit, sheetrock, a lot more lights, and lots of shelving and bench area. With that in mind, I'll wait to show any pics of the interior :)

I would greatly appreciate a litte more info. Custom carpentry is a former career and longime hobby of mine so would use any info. you have to help me build a similar fence. My wife would love it. There's a picture of my current cedar fence above in my garage pictures where you may have noticed in the distance some of the beams are propped up with "temporary fixes" until I can redo it all this spring. Maybe I could even re-use my cedar pickets with the new design. Thanks.

Okay, you guys have inspired me to finish up the downstairs of my garage. I have purchased 250 ft of wiring to first finish up all wiring, including upstairs which presently has no lights or outlets. Next will be insulation in the ceiling and walls, then the ceiling and wall paneling. Then the painting of these panels and a new floor surface. I plan to put the ceiling a semi-flat white, and the walls a light gray color.
I realize this will take me into the spring considering that whenever I have time to work and the weather allows I will have to move the cars out of the way and also considering that I have no heat out there.
Here is a picture with the shop in the background. It measures 28 x 32 feet.

Just prior to starting the teardown of our 68 in November, we had the three layer epoxy layed down on the daily garage and downstairs shop. I love it. Cost me $2.25 per sq. ft and very worth it. The only negetive is that the welding sparks can leave a burn mark in the floor. I have learned the past few weeks to cover the floor and it works fine.
I would also suggest lots of outlets and shop air locations. When we built this house, I had the plumber install pex water line in the walls for the shop air. We have seven locations around the house.

Thx.. not really my garage its a 40 x 24 pole barn thats partitioned down the middle so each side is rougly 20 x 22 insde from wall to wall one Camaro on each side = P other side has been done for years for insulation, the side im on startign working on the car last winter to cold so got to work.

Even started to reorganize my tool box.. btw you may have a shopping problem at sears, or your on there preferred customer list!

Craftsman Stools
- Clock
- Grinder
- Welder
- Roll around
- Custom Toolbox table, like that btw
- Prolly that vise!
- Hang down lite

btw whats that on your tool box? And what size is that buidling? like 14 x 20?
And also alot of my car parts are inside the house in the basement, like my doors decklid have no front sheetmetal tires are down there theres still alot of crap out there but it was better then it was in the beginning of Oct.... there was a path to get in the side door walk around to the middle door to the other side.. now I could almost move the car over and drive another car in

Tristan,

Geesh..you missed the shelfs, compressor, cabinet light, air tank, mini-compressor, battery charger ...etc. :)
To be honest, as a Craftsman Club member for years, I get flyers with deals and if I need something, I grab it. Most things you see I got for Harbor Frieght or Northern Tool prices....and you can't beat that.

Its a 20x20 garage and its only 6 months old and I already know it should have been bigger. I am in the city and have restrictions so I went with a readsonable size.

it's at a stand still till i decide how i want to finish it out. it will also have a paint booth in it. working on the floor plan now. just trying to make sure i get the most for the room. the paint booth will have storage above. i am in no hurry. i just want it to be. the way i want it when i am done. i have took in ideas for it on this site. it has to be done to paint the camaro. i know what you mean though. like now put in paint booth or GM crate 383 stroker. i got a feeling there is a stroker headed toward my house. the finishing of the shop is not really being put off. just want to take my time. even at that when i am done there will be something i will wish i had done different.

Hey John,
I think I see a piece of lint over there in the corner. It's gray, about 1/4" x 1/100" right inbetween the crack of the corner where the tile meets the wall. Oh, and I think the tool box is about 1" out of line :D

White walls help with lighting, boring, maybe, but best reflected indirect lighting overall, therfore the most useful. I've tried past garages with "color". Doesn't come close to using white. This time, I used white epoxy, in semi-gloss white. Adding "stripes" around might make it less "boring". Just an opinion of course. :beers:

Nov 16th, 08, 10:42 AM
Maybe use these 4x8 white recycled plastic panels (http://doitbest.com/Fiberglass+panels-Parkland+Group-model-PTC0046M-doitbest-sku-100367.dib) instead of painting?
Might seem pricey but no need to buy paint, washable, bolts shelving up against them. Might be worth considering.
For 30x38x10' area, Walls would be around $660 and if you did ceiling for more light reflection, another $760.

Hey 71maligreen. I concurr with the others on the white (or near white) walls. See my post #95 in this thread. I have the same interior wall board as you and I think 3 coats of paint, but the illumination in the shop is outstanding. If white is too boring - hang a bunch of s**t (stuff) on the walls! :beers:

Hey guys thanks for the Ideas! I agree that white would be the sensible thing to do but I've never been abused of being sensible. :clonk: The mural idea is good. What do you guys think of a mural of a drag strip complete this grand stands with fans & a starting light the drag strip would taper & into the wall? When the cars are parked it would look like they are about to race. Or something like that would be good in the "showroom".
I’m thinking more like home-like colors in the "main work room". I'll buy more lights if it's too dark. I'm trying to get away from what's typically found in garages. Been playing with some sample colors but am open to ideas, your help is appreciated!
Sorry about the small pictures hope these are better, I'm still learning.

If city code or neighbors wont mind, have the mural painted on the outside of the garage doors. I always toyed with the idea of a mural on my door and actually showed what the inside looks like :D the camaro, shelving with stuff on it, air compressor at the side, a dog laying on the floor with a guy's back at a workbench... from outside it would look just like it would if the door was open. :D
Drag strip idea is good too. My wife does murals and its a talent that only a few have. Go for it, inside or outside.

That's what I'm talkin about!! I live in San Francisco. Which is good, but bad if you want a large garage. A house here with a garage for 4 cars would be about 5 mill plus..So I have to keep my stuff 30 miles away in MY airplane hanger. Kinda sucks but I do have an airplane , so i guess it's not to bad.. Nice pics boys..

I know if you ask 100 people, 99 of them will tell you the same thing that I will say. My garage is WAY-TOO small. I built a 28 x 28 behind my house, with a 35' deep carport on the front of it. I can have a couple project disected at a time, but I have to keep organized. I also have a second story on my garage, just for storage. It is nice to keep stuff off of the floor. There is a sub-frame for a '69 camaro, and a complete finished frame for a '70 Chevelle SS 396 car in this shot.

Some really nice set ups in here... mine isn't nearly as nice as a lot of them, but I like it... it's awfully messy right now but a good deal of the clutter is parts waiting to go onto the car. I've only been in this house just over a year. The garage is 24' x 24'. The carpet is from the previous owner, as are all the magazine clipping pictures. Eventually I'm planning to repaint everything, put up nicer pictures and vintage signs, and get rid of the carpet and do VCT tile in a grey and black checkerboard pattern, 4 squares by 4 squares, on a 45º angle. All time and money I don't have...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v59/mmorrison/68%20Camaro/Dec_12_08a.jpg

It may not be all that fancy or have a lift, but it's heated and comfortable, and with the carpet you can walk around in your sock feet in the middle of winter. The garage is really the main reason I bought this house, other than the location (out in the country near a small village by the lake). It seems quite luxurious to me, as my previous garage was tiny...

I own an automotive repair shop and the Bend-Pak lift is a good lift, it just doesn't come with the high price for the name such as a Rotary. Rotary to their credit, has become more competitive in pricing in the last few years. If you're looking for the best deal, try Northern Tools or Google Bend-Pak lifts and then click on the Google Shopping link up top. The last few lifts I purchased were used and I got a killer deal so you could look in your local for sale ads such as Craigslist.

Our building is built with wood trusses, so I use 3/8" X 4" eye screws into the ceiling joist. Then put a bolt in each back hindge hole. Then make a closeable wire hook with an eye to go under the bolt and through the eye in the ceiling. The wire is the same that is used to hang ceiling grid in commercial buildings. I'm pretty sure they are not going to fall. I use the same method to support the front of the shelving you see in pics.
http://inlinethumb08.webshots.com/44871/2672845320098367311S500x500Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2672845320098367311NNFzMO)http://inlinethumb09.webshots.com/21384/2229090440098367311S500x500Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2229090440098367311JAsvvW)

I use that wire for everything. Since floor space is at a premium I hang alot of parts from the ceiling. You can thread conduit through the eye screws and hang alot more pieces in the area.

I have been looking for that billboard for 7 loooong years! :(

It was a giveaway at one of our Camaro shows. We had several. I did not win it but someone gave it to me since they did not have room for it. I tried to find out who got the others but did not have any luck.
Better than paint.

Here are some pics of my garage project from since last fall. Finally ready to bring the Camaro home from storage to it's new stall. :) Garage is 24ft deep X 28 wide with cathedral trusses to give me 12ft over the left stall for a lift.

Just a few questions, did you do the work yourself? What was the cost? Did you leave the walls block on the outside or cover them in the dryvit like the house? Why block instead of stick built? What type garage doors are those? Sorry for so many questions but I really like your shop!

Ok I'll answer the best I can.

I sub'ed out the major stuff, stucco, garage door install, concrete, block, rough plumbing, roof/framing. I did all the electrical, final plumbing, drywall, floor coating, painting. I pulled all permits as an owner builder and used local contractors based on word of mouth recommendations from people in the area who had recently built their garages.

The outside is a stucco finish. I left the interior walls bare block which I am painting. I hope to have new pics up in a cpl of days.

I used block for strength. We can use this garage as an alternate "safe house" during a hurricane if the main house gets compromised.

The garage are coplay doors from Home Depot. They are deigned to meet all wind codes for my area.

Hope this answers your questions.

Nice garage Bill ! I am a few years away from building my dream garage, so I want to start thinking about it now. I was wondering how a large shop/1 door building would work? Most have one door per bay. I got to thinking though, that a setup like yours would leave more room for modifications and layout possibilites. I'm also thinking of sticking a 26' motorhome in it, so I'm still trying to figure out how big to build it.

Zoning and lot size are not an issue on my property, luckily. It just has to pass the wife's approval.

What is the size of your garage? Do you have to heat or cool it?

Thanks - Mark

Aaron - awesome! That's what I want. How big is your garage door? Do you plan on heating it, and if so, what kind of fuel? How thick did you go w/ the pad? Do you have a lift? Sorry for all the questions, but this has piqued my interest. Thanks - Mark

Thanks Jim. I have had a lot of inquiries on how I supported the bonus room (18' wide) on a 26' wide garage. I can post some pics of my design or PM unless you already have your selections made. I built it from plans I modified (original truss roof) off the internet.

Again thanks!
