Hi,
I need to repair/replace my door hinges on the 69 coupe. I bought the repair kit, but am wondering if I should just repalce the whole hinge. Mine need the springs and the pins are fairly loose. Other than cost, what are the other considerations. Can you accomp[lish either task without taking the door totally off?
Thanks guys

You will have to remove the hinges to rebuild them. It will be tricky getting them off with the doors on but it can be done. You will have to put a jack under the end of the door and if you have a good paint job you had better tape all the door and fender edges good. Use the blue tape so when you remove it, it will not remove any paint. On the lower hinge you had better have the tool for compressing the little spring. I saw a cheap one a Harbour Freight but I have one from Snap On. Also you will have to readjust your doors. Before removing the hinges put some tape around the edges of the hinges for a reference spot when reinstalling them.
Last time I used Repo hinges I had to drill the mounting holes bigger to get the doors to aligned right. If yours are not rebuildable, I would buy some used ones and rebuild them. Also you could buy a used set off ebay and rebuild them first.

also be careful when you bolt them back on. They might have been adjusted with the sag in them and won't line up in the same spot.

Much cheaper to rebuild yours than buying even used ones on Epay.
of course if you do buy used ones make sure you buy the correct year.

The advantage of buying a set is you can take them apart. Paint them and put them together as a set. Then when you replace them you can do them all at one time. Especially if your car is together already. Plus they are nice and pretty.

Either way the hinges have to be removed. The repops are okay but originals are always a better choice and a hell of a lot less pricey.
The paint peeling shouldnt be an issue if the jamb and hinge area wasnt repainted at some point. The tape tip is good one and if you arent sure about any repaints safe is always better than sorry. Scott was correct that the doors could have been adjusted to compensate for sag but this is fairly easy to correct after the new or rebuilt ones are installed. Use a floor jack or even a milk crate with a couple of 2x's to support the door at the rear during removal. And it always helps to have a friend handy when removing, replacing, or adjusting doors.
But for goodness sake save yourself some grief by having all your parts on hand before beginning the rebuild. Some of that stuff just can't be picked up down at the local AutoZone.
