I am trying to get the Hurst shifter together for my Dodge truck. It is VERY loose and sloppy. I have two stock truck shifters that I can use, and both are sloppy. They are basically Hurst Competition shifters with bayonet handles instead of bolt on handles. The shift arms move laterally as if the shims are too small or worn.

Can I take both shifters apart and use the shims from the parts truck shifter to tighten up the shifter that I want to use?

I have already taken one apart and put it back together with no problems. I think I can do it, but I don't know where to get a shim assortment to tighten up the shifter I have. I thought I could mix and match the shims in the two shifters to make one tight shifter.

Am I off base? Let me know before I take apart my good shifter and ruin it permanently!!

I can't afford to pay Hurst to rebuild it, so I need to find somehow a broke moron like me can repair it.

The Hurst shifter should have some play in it.
The first shim (of the 3 shims) should have a curve to it to keep the lever/shim pack together and provide some play at the same time holding the pack together.

If this first shim is too flatted out, it will not hold the lever/shim pack together tight.

If the internal shifter parts do not have excessive wear and are well greased and the curved shim is good it should be ok
