Hey all,
Can anyone tell me how much horsepower the stock input shaft on a TH400 will handle before having to install 4340 shaft?
Thanks,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

I ran a 400 with a 8" convertor , 468 bbc on spray, 3150# car and 14" slicks, never had any problems for over 300 runs. Dont hurt to run the stronger shaft but there are other weaker links.

10 years ago my friend ran a 800 hp with 250 spray. never broke input shaft. ran a early 32 element second sprag. and a spragless torque converter. also with a transbrake.

Torque is the figure of merit for the input shaft. The THM400 was designed for 400 ft*lbs of torque. HP is a figure relative to RPM. The input shaft will break when the torque limit is exceeded (whatever the real limit is). It doesn't matter how many RPMs it's turning when it reaches the toque limit. Now I suspect that 400 ft*lbs is somewhat conservative and doesn't necesarilly specify the input shaft torque limit.
