Anyone have experience with opening the left extended door when the rod has fallen off inside. I can hear it rattling around, but I can't open the dang door to take the panel off to fix it......

Sorry Mitch...

I can't find anything on AllDataPro that will be helpful. Have you tried a slim-jim type tool yet ?

No Kevin, I don't have any tools like that. I will have to put it in the shop today and see if I can get in thru the latch on the front somehow.... I really haven't had the time to check it out lately and was hopeing someone else had done this.
Thanks for doing a search........I didn't know about AllDataPro. I might have to go into one of the full-size forums I am registered in too. Just need to have them email my password.

Our bought new '89 Astro Van had the worst door latch hardware I ever saw in it!

We broke the drivers side door and the two rear doors were a crapshoot if they would open or not!!

AND I don't think GM ever did upgrade this crap over the life of the model run!!

And that's the same crap that cost England the loss of their auto industry in the long run!!

Bad, Bad, Bad!!!

Thank goodness for a heated shop !! It's COOOOOOOOLD here today. I was able to remove the outer release handle and pull up on the bottom release rod and get the door open. I could then remove the inner panel and the latch assembly. The plastic clip that holds the rod to the latch was broken, as I suspected. I removed the broken clip to take to the dealer for reference and proceeded to make a redneck clip out of baling wire.....:D. It not only holds the dang rod from rattling around, which was driving me nuts, but it works to open the door too...... YeeeHaaaw:hurray:

Pretty easy to check, Clayton. When the drivers door is open on mine there is a black plastic handle to pull that opens the extension door. That black handle is only held on by two torque screws. By removing them and the handle you can see the mechanism and the release rods thru there. You might be able to see what's wrong......;)
