Okay, I posted this in another forum but WHAT is the 4.8 LS 1 ? WHAT parts will I need to wire it, I have the original truck harness and computer but can I pull some ponies by a stand alone kit from ? and what if I want to put a stick behind it? internal or external balance? can I buy a wrecking yard 5.7 setup, flywheel bell, and six speed? Would it be better to swap it into my 97 V6 car? And then theres that tall plastic intake yuk.

The 4.8 is either an LR4 GenIII smallblock or LY2 (2007+) GenIV smallblock. Both are truck members of the "LSX" family of engines, and other than the stroke, they are pretty much identical to the 5.3 liter non-displacement-on-demand truck engines. Depending on what year you have, it may be a cable-operated throttle or a drive-by-wire throttle. You can bolt an LS1 intake and accessories to it if you need more hood clearance. Mounts are the same for all LSX family. To put a stick behind it, use an Fbody LS1 T56 transmission with an LS2 flywheel and LS7 clutch, and a standard 1941-present GM V8 pilot bushing. Technically you could use the LS1 flywheel and clutch, but the LS7 clutch is really nice :). There are also ways to adapt Muncie/TKO/etc to the LSX, but I'm not sure of the details on those.

You don't need a standalone PCM--the GM PCMs are better than a lot of aftermarket PCMs. You just need software to tune it, such as HPTuners or EFILive. Splicing an LSX engine/PCM harness is really easy, and there are several companies that specialize in reworking those harnesses if wiring isn't your thing (they can also reflash your PCM for you).

You need to go check out the Conversions & Hybrids forum on LS1Tech.com. There are several people on there who've done LSX swaps into V6 4th gen cars. The general advice though is to sell the V6 4th gen car and buy one with a factory LS1.

Ive seen 5.3's on epay and just installed one in a jeep. great rock krawler.

The guy that sells them installs a complete standalone system for them and there are a few companies out there that will reflash you ECM with whatever you ask.

That 5.3 is damn nice little motor and you can pick those things up dirt cheap to boot! The prices on ebay seem a little high compared to what I've heard of people getting them for at local yards around the country.
