I posted this a little back but got no response, so I'm trying again. I have an opportunity to buy a powerglide with a break really cheap. What can I look for to verify the tranny is good? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

fluid clean or burnt up. output and input shaft turn with noises or not. splines on stator stripped or not. if it has a trans brake some where it has to have a connector for electric to go to it. besides that really nothing but opening it up and inspecting.

As said, check fluid color and smell; black fluid will smell burnt.
Pull convertor out and check to see it has Turbo input splines, i.e., larger diameter. PG splines are about an inch in diameter.

Also check oil pump housing where the t/conv fits into for a bushing to support the t/conv, goes with the Turbo splined input shaft.

If its used and cheap, its had a hard life. However, it can be overhauled and will perform.

Thanks for the input, I guess my best bet is if the guy will warantee it.

I guess my best bet is if the guy will warantee it.It is a used transmission, "AS-IS, Where Is."

If it were a stock trans from the salvage yard, U-Pick-It, etc., maybe a 30-day exchange. Private seller, you're on your own, buyer beware.

Just my thoughts.

Brian,

I have to concur to the guys that know, but I think our cars are slightly overweight for a 'Glide to be used most effectively.. I'm thinking 3400 to 3500 pounds w/ an all iron BB and a driver ready to go..

I know they are used, but I think one will probably do a lot better in a 2800 pound car.

As always, jmho..

pdq67,
I have read exactly what your saying, but I've also read people using them. Always a ying and a yang.

No input on verifying if it's a good tranny or not, but I will say I agree the glide is not the best choice for your car probably. In fact if it's running in the low 12's like your sig says I will guess you may slow down. Plus unless it's got a turbo spline input shaft you will need a new converter so keep that in mind.
It's not so much weight necessarily as it is power, if you are going to run a glide in a heavy car it better be making plenty of it. We ran a glide in the old race car and it was almost 3500#'s race weight, but the motor was making over 1500 horse, ran 7.70 @ 176. We went from a th400 to the glide and the car was quicker.
In a car thats making under 500 horse IMO you will want it to be light for sure.
Just my experiences with them, nothing says I'm not wrong (it's happened before ;) ). It's your car so do whatever you want, and good luck with it

Sean,

RIGHT you are BUT guy, come on!!

A 1500 hp ride.....................

I'm trying to parrot back what guys have said about a decent street/sometime race BB in our cars and it seems like 2800 pounds is a rough cut-off point where a 2-speed drop's back from a 3-speed.

And as always jmho..

Look at how a BB and even a SB equipped Boss Hoss motorcycle run's w/ just basically and in/out 2-speed box or at least that's whatI think they run, it's been a while since I checked...

No No PDQ, that was my point exactly, if you want to put a glide in it's optimal situation, you need a light car or lots of power, I was agreeing with you!
Heres my quote from the post;

I can see it was somewhat misleading, but my point was you need a light car or lotsa power, we are on the same page here I think :beers:
