i need to know if axles out of a 8.2 camaro rear end non pos will work in a 8.5 pos rearend.i have a rearend out of a 69 camaro that is not pos but its a 8.2 i think. it has axles in it.i dont want to tear it apart if they wont fit the 8.5.rearend.axles in the 8.5 are all pitted where the bearings ride on the axles.ive looked for the sleeves that go over axles like they use on the harmonic balancers but cant find them.i have used them before but no one knows what im talking about.thanks for any information on this i appreciate it.

When I did the 8.2-8.5 swap I put the axles from both rears side by side and they looked to be the same. There may be slight differences though. I didn't go beyond 'looking' at them.
They sell axle bearings that shift the bearing surface over to an unused portion of the axle. They come as a complete piece, with the seal. They work, but aren't a long term permanent fix.

The axles have the same diameters between the two 10-bolts, and if the rears are the same width the axles should be the same length. If the 8.5 posi is out already, have you counted the splines? I believe the Chevy 8.2 is a 28-spline, and the 8.5s came in 28 and 30 spline versions.

As Eric points out if they are the same dimension housing the axles will fit. I actually did that very thing with mine, when I put the 8.5 in I used the axles from my 8.2 because they looked better.
But as also was said, be sure you are dealing with a 28 spline 8.5 diff, I believe the pre '89 8.5 diffs are 28, but after '89 they are 30.
However, if you can afford it I suggest new axles if the car will be any kind of performance oriented, the 40 year old axles are suspect at best and can do serious damage if they fail.

If I remember correctly, one can buy new axles from www.gmpartsdirect.com unless some retail seller bought them all to sell as NOS.

Anthony - I recently encountered the same problem with the axles in my 69 Camaro, and purchased new Alloy HD axles from Jegs for around $85 each. They're a lot stronger than the stock axles, and reasonably priced.
