I am thinking about swapping in either a 5.3L out of a GM truck, or an LS1 into my 68 Camaro. Either way, I would like to retain a manual transmission. Does anyone know what manual transmissions would be compatible with either one? The LS1 is relatively easy since they were paired with mauals from the factory, but having trouble finding swap info on the 5.3L. I would not be against using a 4 speed transmission either. Thanks!

Here's my $0.02,

The research I've done into LS engines says that the transmission/bellhousing is a structural member for the engine...it bolts to the oil pan and provides strength to the engine as a whole. There may be a company that makes a bellhousing that will adapt to the new engine and still fit a muncie/TKO/etc., but the best bet would be a 6-speed built for an LS1/LS2. Stay away from the Corvette 6-speed...too many mods to make it work for a reasonble cost. Now, the iron block engines may be different...that I don't know.

Good Luck

The easiest thing to use is a T56 from a 98-02 F-body. It bolts right up to the 5.3. All you need to do is put an LS1 flywheel/clutch on it (or LS2 flywheel w/ LS7 clutch) and tap a pilot bushing into the crank (same bushing Chevy has used since 1940 or so). ATS (t56kit.com) sells a really slick crossmember for the T56, and a kit to convert your clutch pedal to hydraulic operation.

I think McLeod and Lakewood both make scattershields designed to mate a stand Chevy trans (Muncie, TKO, etc) to an LSX engine.

Thanks for the guidance. Not sure if Im crazy or not yet for considering this. Since my car was originally a 327, thought it might be novel to go with the 5.3 instead of an LS1 or LS2.

You could also source the flywheel/clutch/trans from a 4.8L powered Chevy van/work truck, quit a few of those out there and alot lower price point than the ls1 related items. I have a low milage 5.3 setup if you interested.
