: 69 Headliner help
CraigT69RS Jan 4th, 08, 02:42 PM Hi guys! Need some more guidance again. I am about to get started with my headliner replacement for my 69 Camaro coupe. I read all the threads about the bow rods and how to handle them, but can anyone tell me how I am supposed to remove the shoulder belt plastic covers? I thought they would just pop off since I don't see any screws, but they don't seem to want to pop off easily. Instaed of forcing these 38 year old covers, I figured I'd ask the experts. Any advice?? Thanks!
Steptoe Jan 4th, 08, 10:28 PM Sry cant rem..
Couple other things
Take some pic with a tape measure from anchor points so u can find the holes later..espec those little ones for the coat hooks
If u forget to..check back in some old posts of mine, it has some pics with tape meaure.
From memory the covers..didnt break any...one end had a soft edge, this lifted or undid the clip that end, then the cover sort of slides an unclips the other sides????
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Jan 5th, 08, 05:17 AM Remember to mark the bow rods with some tape front to back and which hole, I cant remember the seatbelt issue either..sorry.Dave
mb302rs Jan 5th, 08, 07:09 AM It opens like a clam shell from the bottom ...(long side) has a hindge at the top.----unless some put it in upside down:D
The best way to find the holes for the clothes hooks , sholder harness retainers an the like is to install the bare screws before you install the head liner. Then you can feel them thruogh the liner. Make a small cut with a razor blade over the head of the screw. Then back them out through the hole.
Perfect match without measuring mistakes

CraigT69RS Jan 5th, 08, 08:00 AM Great suggestions.. I have just one more question for you. On the edges where the plastic "c" molding holds down the headliner edges, how does this come out? I assume it will just pry off, but figured it was better to ask versus make a mistake and damage it. Thanks again for all the advice. I think you guys have saved me quite a bit of headaches :-)
mb302rs Jan 5th, 08, 08:16 AM The windlace just pulls off. I usually start in the middle above the door glass and just ease it off .
prostreet69camaro Jan 5th, 08, 08:40 AM Put screws where everything was mounted before you install the new headliner. The sunvisors, rear view mirror, inside light, shoulder belt and any thing else removed from the headliner. Leave the screws long or change out to about 1" screws. Once you have the headliner installl and streched like you want it, all you have to do is find the screw heads. Make a small slit where the screw head is and that is where you mount it at. That is a lot easier than trying to find the holes when it is covering the holes. You can also use it for installing carpet. Easier to find the seat mounting bolts and safety belts.
Steptoe Jan 5th, 08, 10:14 AM I prefer the photo to locate then a pin to find the exact location
A little silcone on the screw go thru pin hole.. carefull so the headliner doesnt bind
cuts in the head liner can tend sometimes to rip under the stretch of the liner in time.
CraigT69RS Jan 5th, 08, 10:29 AM Ok, the headliner and windlace have been removed. I need to puschase some adhesive to finish the installation, so I'm about done for today. Leaving the screws in to find them later sounds like a great idea. Anyway, thanks for all the help and hopefully I can get to the installation in the next few days. Thanks again!!!
hypersport750 Jan 5th, 08, 10:36 AM Don't mean to hijack this thread, but while we are on the subject. Any way to drop the headliner down so I can check for the dome light wiring. When the headliner was installed by PO, they attached the dome light mount and cover. So when the light did not work and I took the cover off all I saw was unmolested headliner. I cut a slit to see if the wiring and or light bulb mount was visible, but there was a hard backing behind it, like a two inch strip. Is this one of those bows? Last time I did a headliner was on a 73 firebird, but that was seventeen years ago and was not sure how close that set up is as the my 69 Camaro.
Thanks in advance

Badbird Jan 5th, 08, 11:03 AM Craig, let me know how your headliner installation turned out as I'll be doing this on my 68 coupe this year, I've never done this before.....The installation of all the screws sounds like an excellent idea!.....Will you be purchasing the adhesive in a spray can?

Rob , The dome light wire route for the light is-strait to wind lace area above the drivers door glass. You could pull down the windlace and pull a small section of the headliner loose from the pinchweld to look for a orange and white wire, But if you pull too much loose theres not enough material to pull on to get it tight agian. Before you do this..... The wiring harness connection for the dome light wire is right on top of the drivers rear wheel well and you can see it from the trunk. Make sure the wire is connected there first.:D
carbon69 Jan 5th, 08, 12:17 PM A couple tips for installing a headliner, I just finished mine. Use good, heatproof glue.
Also, go buy about 8-12 good spring clamps. They look like a giant clothes pin, I got mine at home depot. This not only helps hold it in place after you glue it, but helps you position it correctly before the glue. Before I used any glue, I used these clamps to install the headliner, and then was able to go back and snug things up. Make vertical cuts about 1/2 inch on both sides of the seam up to the edge of the the roof line. This will give you something to grasp will you tug the seam tight. Do above the doors first, then quarters, front, and rear last. Once you do the rear, it usually will remove any zig zag wrinkles acrross the quarter window. any horizontal wrinkles will be from not having your seams tight enough. Good luck man, you can do it. oh, and leave you sunvisor screws in the car, not screwed all the way in, then when you are completely done, use your finger to locate them, and carfully pop them through.

I saw that connection was made at the harness on the drivers wheel well in the trunk. So I pulled down a little bit of the headliner along the drivers side door. I could see the orange and white routed and clipped on along the roof. I went back around the dome light and tapped and felt the wire. I took off the dome light cover and cut open a larger opening in the headliner, I fished my hand s around and found the end..... Cut off .
Well looks like a new dome light harness is being put on the list.
Thanks again for the tip.
