View Full Version : Help Decoding 8.5 Rear
hlcass Jan 5th, 08, 07:13 PM I just purchased a 373 posi 8.5 rear that was in a 68 Camaro for my 69.
It has Multi Leaf Purches that are 42 7/16 on center, 54 1/4 flange to flange.
Is this a Nova or Chevelle rear? An what year?
Axle Tube Numbers are:
CG G349 2G
Thanks!!!!
madmax87 Jan 5th, 08, 07:41 PM Not sure of the year but it looks like a Chevelle originally a 3:36 posi. Here's a link.

Eric Kammerer Jan 5th, 08, 08:17 PM Well, the stamp format xx y### #z marks it as a 71 and up rear.
The application code is CG
Second G = plant (Detroit Gear and Axle)
349 = Julian date, 349th day of the year
2 = night shift
G = Detroit Gear and Axle Posi
I don't know what the CG code is from, and your measurements don't quite match any I can find.
Does it have the ears and mounts for an A-body rear trailing arm/coil spring suspension?
Eric Kammerer Jan 5th, 08, 08:26 PM If there's no evidence it had control arm ears or coil spring pads, I found a CG code used in 71 and 72 Firebird, 3.73 posi. But your flange to flange is about 1 inch short for a 2nd gen rear, and the perches have been moved to 1st gen width (more or less).
hlcass Jan 5th, 08, 10:03 PM Eric,
The ring gear last is stamped 1 GM 3988517 11 41 9 71.
So I think is a 373 (41 teeth on ring gear). Do you know if the last number (71) is the year?
I'm thinking it might be a 71 Camaro rear with the tubes and purches modified many years ago.
Thanks for your help on this.
Eric Kammerer Jan 6th, 08, 08:19 AM 9 71 is September 71, making it a 72 model rear. And you are right, CG was also the code for the 71 and 72 Camaros 10 bolt with 3.73. So someone swapped it out. Did you pay attention to what backspacing the 68 it was pulled out of was using? You should be fine with it as long as you run enough backspace (5 inches? 5.5 inches?)

hlcass Jan 6th, 08, 04:49 PM I did not notice the back spacing in the 68. I have stock 15 x 8 rallys corvette wheels on the back. Do you think I will be safe?
Thanks!!!
Eric Kammerer Jan 6th, 08, 08:27 PM You'll know when you bolt it in...
My guess is they're going to stick out too far. I think the corvette 15x8 is a 4" backspace.
There is a shot of my car in this thread wearing a 15x8 255/60 15 with 4" backspace:

Also here with 15x8 245/60 15 with 4" backspace:

A second gen rear, un-narrowed, is 2 inches wider than a 1st gen (55.25 flange to flange vs. 53.25 flange to flange). The rear in my car is an X-body 8.5 10-bolt, so it is the same as a 1st gen.
My wheels with 4" backspace fit fine, but if they were another inch out on each side, they would hit the wheel opening, no doubt.

Eric Kammerer Jan 7th, 08, 10:31 AM Good luck!
