If it's stock it's a 700-R4.

i own two f-bodies and from my experience they are the longshaft 700r4s. These are good trannies up to 350 horsepower i reccomend buying a streetfighter turbo350 with a low stall converter. Also pick up the torquearm brackets to go with or just like some people and weld it to the frame (bad idea but does work). It will all cost around 1000 but you have a good converter 2.52 first gear and a 450 horsepower rated trans. Just my opinion form breaking the700r4 after 8.90s in the 1/8 I sold the car and know the trans has handle the 125 shot at 7.70s with no prob.

As I recall, if it has METRIC embossed in the pan its a 200C. Unfortunately I loaned out my tranny manual or else I'd look it up. Is it a three speed automatic? The 200C is a three speed with lock-up.

Check out http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-transmission-identification.php for pan shapes. The 200C is not shown, but the foot note explains that it is similar in shape to the THM350 pan except for the METRIC embossement.

All automatic Camaros in '85 got 700-R4's. My '86 El Camino had a 305 and a Metric 200 in it, that would make it easy for folks to think the Camaro could have one as well. Also after 20 something years anything could have been swapped in...

I did some further research and Dennis is correct. In 85 the 700R4 was standard equipment. The 200C was used in 1980-83 Camaros. Here is a link. http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/site/573683/page/372807

In any event, I know of no other transmission than the 200C with METRIC stamped on the pan. The OP said, "I know it's a metric", and I presume he says that because of the pan embossment. Perhaps it is a transplant.

Now would be a good time for sammyboy to drop in and clarify the details.
