I should be getting my 9" rear in a few days and was wondering something.. I had him install GM housing ends so I can bolt on my factory drum brakes. My question is will the For big bearing fit through the opening on my backing plate??? I measured 2 1/2" opening and I believe the bearing is larger than that. Am I missing something? Or do I have to enlarge the opening? If so I can't do much because of ho close the mounting holes are. Someone shed some light for me!

The old style Ford big bearing has an OD of 3.5", the new Torino style big bearing is 3.562". You will need to check the bolt spacing on the axle retainer plate. I don't know if they are the same.

When I did mine I used the Torino style ends and Ford brakes.

Wow that really stinks! I thought I could just bolt on my brakes since I had GM housing ends welded on. I'll have to look when I get them I guess. The part that really stinks is I had both plates powder coated already:sad:. That backing plate has to be perfectly installed or the brakes will be off.

Update...Did some research. I couldn't get in touch with Quick P. (sunday) I believe with the chevy ends the bearing is 3.150 OD. sound right? Hope so, I reemed out my backing plated to 3.200. Anybody?

isn't the backing plate what holds the bearing in the axle housing?
You install the backing plate on the axle, then press the bearing onto the axle, then install the axle, and finally bolt the backing plate to the housing.

No I believe there is a U shaped retainer that holds the axle. Moser is sending me alxles with the bearings already pressed on.

I got it guys. I got this email thismorning. Awnsered my question. Marc ,The 9" axle bearing that will need to slide through you backing plate has an outside diameter of 3.150". So you will need to open the hole in your backing plate up slightly.

Thanks guys

use backing plates from a 70 to 72 elcamino twelve bolt, thats what i used and they bolted up and had bigger brakes also.
