After 6 months of almost 7 days a week working saving$$$$$ and uncountless hrs of Homework what motor, I landed on this ....Scott at Gilbert is a very good and knowledgeable guy to talk to,he is to call me today to confirm and of course get payment ....aprox 3 weeks to delivery...:hurray::beers:a few beers tonite to celabrate
Dougs72Nova Jan 18th, 08, 07:47 AM Hey Jerome. 464 hp @6100 440 ft/lb torque @5300. Very nice! Sounds more economical to go with an auto trans since you already are running one. I love my 5 speed, but automatics are much easier on drivetrain parts.:D With your 3.73 i don't believe you need to go with a overdrive trans unless you mostly drive on the highway. If you do go with the t-350(very good transmissions when done correct) make sure you use a high quality convertor with around 3000-3500 rpm stall. If it was a dragstrip only car i would reccomend even higher. Sounds like your going to have a very intense street car! I'm sure your going to get a bunch of opinions on the trans choice(hopefully). Keep in touch. Doug
6D9 Jan 18th, 08, 10:42 AM Either a TKO 600 or a add a GV overdrive to your current TH350 auto. Then get a high quality converter matched to your combo. Either one would rock!
dylanjans Jan 18th, 08, 11:40 AM that is one stout pump gas 350
seems like they build a crate motor pretty close to what i would want to build myself if were doing a 350
DougP Jan 18th, 08, 12:25 PM Jerome -- congrats, bet you can't wait to drop it in and start 'er up for the first time
77wolf10.85 Jan 18th, 08, 05:48 PM Congrats Jerome, you will love it. The cam intrigues me. 4 intake and 2 exhaust degrees more duration than my hot cam and same LSA, you will will like the way it sounds.
btw I vote TH-350 with a mild stall converter.
pdq67 Jan 18th, 08, 06:17 PM Great you got it!!

Old baldguy Jan 19th, 08, 06:10 AM Thank You Guy's, I am right now tired and can't think ,another day at work ,but I stay focused on the benny of doing 7 day a week (this topic) and what Tranny ???????? A lot of talk about Hyper pistons but used in the correct applacation ,I have read and been told they are great light, strong(for the app.)like anything has a down side briddle..GM rate's the ZZ4 S/B to 500hp ,and I figured for my App. that was good for me and I wanted to have the GM warranty..Thanks again..:)Happy Motoring
Old baldguy Feb 5th, 08, 10:58 AM Well: he got back to me friday faxed me some numbers and combo's he suggested ,and I decided on the ZZ4 short block with the GM 12370847 Hyd Roller .539i/558e ,Dur@.05 234/242 112 deg CL ,AFR #10610 180cc /58cc chamb. (there not the Eliminator head ,he had this pair on his shelf new and couldn't refuse )I may have him add the AFR Rev kit. Intake Victor jr.,Comp ratio will be 10.0 to 1
I am sending my Dist and Carb to him as he is using me as a spect motor and Dynoing for nothing I said cool ,so I should be around 450 hp 440 torque ,I will keep you all posted with the outcome of the real numbers,I am excited :)....so what yo guys think ,I hope it all works out 6,289.00$$took me 6 months and very few days off to make this happen
wiskeesour Feb 5th, 08, 11:09 AM nice. very nice. :D
zdld17 Feb 5th, 08, 12:16 PM TKO 600 / 3:73 gear.
Car nut Feb 5th, 08, 12:54 PM Make sure you don't catch any bugs in your teeth from smieling when driving. Sounds great. It will be worth it. You have around 100 more horse than me.Brian
Jonesy Feb 5th, 08, 01:08 PM TKO 600 / 3:73 gear.
I agree, thats what I have in my 71 ElCamino SS454.
GMJoe Feb 5th, 08, 03:17 PM Im running a turbo 350 with 373's out back and I dont take it on the interstate very often, she hums pretty good at 65mph and it seems you can watch the fuel guage dropping.
Im gonna ditch the auto for a TKO 600 when funds allow.
speedshifter Feb 5th, 08, 07:02 PM Very nice engine! Why does everyone think they need a stroker these days?
Old baldguy Feb 6th, 08, 06:22 AM Thanks you guys I did a lot of homework I could of got somewhat the same for cheaper from the East coast but I wanted to stay somewhat local ,4 hr drive to pick it up No shipping ,funds don't have the TKO (3,600.00) ,in mind I wish but oh well ,I have my Art Carr PG I can use (just have to change the valve body and get a street converter) or T350 and conv. for 800.00,I am tring to justify charging 3600.00 for the TKO setup ,but it aint working so far....Took my carb off last nite and apart to let air out before I box up and ship off with Dist . If anybody in the Pacific NW thinking of buying parts call Scott at Gilbert Chevrolet Milton Freewater Oregon, he seams to have better prices than some of the big houses and very knowladgeable and likes to talk motors , I figure I will be all together I hope by May and the weather starts cooperating...Happy Motoring and Thanks again guys...:)
Old baldguy Feb 15th, 08, 06:04 AM Hi All:Well Scott at Gilbert Chev called me last nite with numbers from the Dyno of my engine ,and wow I think there very respectable ,3 different pulls.
1st ,with a Demon 750, 515 hp@6200 and 478 ft lbs Torque
2nd with a Holly HP 750 512 hp @ 6200 & 475 ft lbs T
3rd with my Holly HP 930 495 hp @6100 & 460 ft lbs T
(We wanted to try my carb as we both figured it would be to much
Carb as this was off my 10.70's Drag motor, so I bought a new HP 750
From them and he is going to setup the carb and make one more pull today.
I should receive it late next week ,I have my current motor almost
Out ….I opted for the cool cast alum bowtie valve covers (not Cheep)
So it will look like the picture in the link 1st post
So what do you guys think HP to the rear wheels ( do you loose 25% going through the drive train??? Thanks any comments appreciated…We are Happy Motoring :) What superising is this is with the smaller 180cc 58cc ARP heads
He is going to start offering this motor as an option to the Super AFR ZZ4
Oh by the way I am leaning towards the TKO500:)
6D9 Feb 15th, 08, 05:07 PM Sweet numbers! With a stick you lose about 15%.
Old baldguy Feb 17th, 08, 09:59 AM Sweet numbers! With a stick you lose about 15%.
Thank you 6D9 ,and one of my buddys (a tranny guy) figured about the same loss in HP with a manual ,Auto he said about 20 %..Thanks again and always Happy Motoring(No rest if ya got Goals to achieve like a TKO500 working the weekends):):beers:and a beer when ya get home....
cgrady Feb 17th, 08, 11:40 AM hey Jerome, disregard my pm....i see your current posts....keep us updated.

Yes Chad, Bob did leave retire ,Scott seams very knowledgeable and pleasent to talk to ,and is the head guy ,so far nice to deal with ,and I feel good about the whole transaction ,as I feel for our T/C brother dealing with Prestiege motors in Arizona so sad ,I feel confident this motor will be a quality piece ,you should go check them out Gilbert Chev ,what is it about a hour drive to Milton Freewater for you .I was going to do the 383 deal but did not like the fastburn heads raised D port heads and my headers wouldn't work and being 500.00 I was not going to buy another pair. and things work out good for a reason and they did ...Thanks again Chad ,call Scott and talk to him ,tell him you herd about my motor ,he would be very superised ......stay tuned for more over the next few months ......Happy Motoring :)

68RS-SS Feb 19th, 08, 12:23 PM TKO 600 / 3:73 gear.
I second that recomendation - w/o a doubt much funner than an auto trannny could possibly ever be. When combined with your engine = perfect combo for an exhilerating functional driving experience w/o any regrets. Take it on a vacation though when your finished cause sounds like you've earned it.

68RS/SS thank you I think it will be fun combo also,Well the motor is on its way S/B today ,I just checked the tracking number ,so they will call before delivery and I can leave work and meet the driver and put it in the garage ,I have my existing motor almost ready to pull :),I am pumped I feel like a kid again :yes:in my own mind but the body don't :D....I know I said I was going to let this go ,and update as progress continues but I couldn't resist ...IF anyone is intrested in a motor or parts call Scott at Gilbert Chevrolet before you do one of the big houses ,as he can offer parts cheaper ...just a good guy to deal with ...Happy Motoring:)
Radcannon Feb 20th, 08, 10:54 AM I would get the TH350. Smaller transmission less parasitic and rotational mass losses and cheap. Very good transmission. Then when you are ready a gear vendors unit splits your three into 6 gears and mounts directly to your transmission. Easy just modify driveshaft and hook up some stuff to allow you to manually put it in overdrive or automatically at certain speeds. This is the way im going
cgrady Feb 20th, 08, 01:07 PM Alot of :) in there!!! Making a very cool car, cooooler!! Well Done.
Old baldguy Feb 21st, 08, 11:40 AM Thank you guys for the suggestions on gear boxes ,it is not totally set in stone going with TKO500 ,but purty sure on that ....The dispatcher for Estes Xpress lines called me this morn. and delivery is tomorrow between noon and 4 pm so I will be leaving work couple hrs. early sitting in my garage having a beer or two waiting for my friendly Trucker guy ,pictures should follow monday morn. May I extend a wonderful weekend to All T/C ...:)Happy Motoring
eville Feb 21st, 08, 11:51 AM With your 3.73 a TKO500 is going to have an unusable 1st gear. The TKO600 is a great tranny in front of a 3.73 rear gear.
Old baldguy Feb 21st, 08, 02:12 PM Steve thanks ,all this time I though it was the 500 with the 2.87 1st,then yes all my preveious posts I ment TKO600,I am sure when i ordered they would of strightened me out:yes:...Thank you for the correction and Happy Motoring
battleax Feb 22nd, 08, 10:22 PM Can't wait to see pictures of your mill. Happy Days are coming.
Old baldguy Feb 23rd, 08, 06:08 AM Delivery was yesterday ,suppost to be between noon and 4 so I had to leave work early to be home by noon, so you know the story took time off for nothing by 4 I was 4 beers down waiting for the truck ,I stopped by 5 had dinner was almost 6 :30 pm when he showed up,no biggie for me ,I felt for the truck driver as he had been on the road delivering for for 10 hrs and running 2 hours late ,but I got it :hurray::yes: to tired to do anything last nite I work an early shift 5 am to 1:30 pm so early to bed...,I will today afterwork take some pictures and post next couple days ,Thanks guys Happy Motoring
Old baldguy Feb 24th, 08, 06:12 AM Well folks here it is, got home from work yester. And got into the crate, she looks good ,and per the Dyno sheet she runs great ,514 hp 478 ft lbs T ,so it now a little wait to make up my mind and get the Tranny ,I will try in the next few days to scan or take a pic. Of the print out sheet and post….Happy Motoring to all

LukeSkywalker Feb 26th, 08, 11:42 AM That is going to be a sweeeeettttt running 350. Just goes to show what the right parts can do.
Old baldguy Feb 28th, 08, 06:04 AM Thanks guys
I have been in contact with 3 vendors on the Tremec 5 speed (TKO600) all with in a few bucks ....I have been taking to Jeff and Scott a few times (nice guys) at Classic Motorsports I think today is the day to order, Scott suggested to go with the 11" Mcleod Street performance clutch ,for my hp just being on the bubble ,he also said I would be good going with the Bellhousing ,almost 3,900.00 to my door...Thank you all so much ,my jaw is still messed up ,Dr. app. tomorrow...anyhoo I will get the print out on soon ,Happy Motoring :)
DougP Feb 28th, 08, 06:14 AM Can't wait to see you get it in and running -- looks like you've got some momentum, so keep it going!!
LukeSkywalker Feb 28th, 08, 06:40 AM Great choice on the Tremec, your going to love it.
battleax Feb 28th, 08, 11:55 PM I have a question for you. What brand and weight oil did Sallee Chev use when they dyno'd your engine? Also what oil filter did they recommend? Nice engine btw. Cisco
Old baldguy Feb 29th, 08, 06:12 AM Thanks soooo much guy's ,I did call Scott at Classic motorsports at 4:00 yester and his extension was busy left a mess. to get ahold of me S/B today, on the Tremec, Cisco I do not know the brand ,10-30W ,is still in there from the Dyno and breakin ,he told me to leave it til I startup warm it to oper temp then change with my brand 10-30W,I like which is Castrol (he said fine W Castrol)and leave in for 1,000 miles then go Synthetic (if I want)(I do not know the # of the filter ,but its blue and A C Delco....I do not think you need to use Rotila with Roller Cams???? I believe from what I have read...I have a message into Scott at Gilbert Chev (Sallee) when he calls I will ask....to all have a wonderful weekend I will ...I have it off ...Going to the Seattle Roadster Show ,One of my Pal's 70 Chevelle in in the show ....Happy Motoring (I will take pictures and try to post some ...):)
Old baldguy Mar 3rd, 08, 09:44 AM Ordered the Tremec TKO600 friday afternoon:yes:from Jeff with the clutch upgrade ,less the optional blue shifter ,I don't have a console, should I still get it???? Jeff told me you only half to trim a little off the opening ??? help what you guys with the Tremec think....also I ordered from Matts classic bowties the powerbrake booster master prop assy. and new lines ,cause my setup ,I did manual was in the way of my clutch rod through the firewall ,so just another 500.00 oh well I am this far my as well do it right ...Happy Motoring:)
Radcannon Mar 3rd, 08, 03:16 PM You are doing it right you will be happy. I just ordered my afr heads yesterday YIPEEEEEE
Dougs72Nova Mar 3rd, 08, 04:41 PM I'm jealous! Very nice!
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Mar 3rd, 08, 04:41 PM Suuweeet! looking engine that should run well.
LukeSkywalker Mar 3rd, 08, 05:29 PM Love the valve covers. Someday I may have to get some.
DZ Fool Mar 3rd, 08, 08:20 PM hey man does that thing got a TREEEEMACK !!!!!
Old baldguy Mar 4th, 08, 06:02 AM Thanks all you fine folk's , just to let you all know ,I have given up the budget thing ,as the more I try down the road it bite's me in the wallet (butt) .
Like my brakes I did manual disc front 8 months ago,I should of just did power (but tried to save a few bucks) ,cause my prop valve I mounted under the Master(right in front of the clutch rod hole in the firewall) ,didn't think about the clutch linkage OOPS ,so I half to redo,I ordered the Power booster master prop valve assembly ,and all new lines (hard) will do before I put the motor in...So I am into motor /trans/ brake's /related hardware,a little over 12,000,how it adds up quick.:yes:well I hope Happy Motoring soon :)
emperor91108 Mar 5th, 08, 12:44 AM Im running a turbo 350 with 373's out back and I dont take it on the interstate very often, she hums pretty good at 65mph and it seems you can watch the fuel guage dropping.
Im gonna ditch the auto for a TKO 600 when funds allow.
Same here. I will be going to a 700R by summer, so I can start getting on the freeway without revving so high.
prostock Mar 5th, 08, 08:10 PM for me,45 years old , I'm in my stuff for a good time not for long drives and my ears need gear whine, watch Two Lane Blacktop and listen to M22, that is my vote, new stuff w/same ratios + overdrive would be great if it sounds like m22, most newer trans have low low first gear but u can order what u want in them. we run atf in m22's for speed shifting and more gear noise.
Old baldguy Mar 6th, 08, 06:18 AM Well the Termec 600 showed up yesterday and all looks good ,I think I am going to call Jeff and order the optional blue shifter as you can leave on and install trans(but thats all secountary) ...My nighbor and good friend of 23 yrs. is in the hospital for emergency heart surgery ,I just was with him monday afternoon for a couple hours and he seamed good .... and He was taken to the hospital Tuesday nite late ,please I need all your prayers I have been trying to contact his girlfriend and left messages on the cell ...I will try today later after 9:00am ,I hope we dont loose him 61 is too young ,and a Vietnam vetren .....enjoy life can be to short...
prostock Mar 6th, 08, 04:08 PM best of luck and our prayers are with your buddy, hope he,s home for the weekend.
Radcannon Mar 6th, 08, 07:46 PM ditto
Old baldguy Mar 7th, 08, 05:58 AM Thanks guy's ,Gary died early yesterday morning, I am speechless ,he will be missed ,he loved cars and was a body /frame guy by trade ,he served in Vietnam ( never talked about that very much) on a river boat and what little he did tell me ,he saw a lot, 62 yrs old ....He was a Ford guy ,but that didn't matter to us, we always had that G M / Ford rivelary, and we loved it, even Monday when I took a couple parts down with me to use his drill press he was curessing them G M parts ...Well we never know from one day to another what may happen (if you havn't seen or talked to a friend or loved one for a bit ,maybe its time to take minute to do so, I am glad I did and spent 2 hrs with him Monday ,May the Lord bless him and all of us.I will let this go til I am back on track with some progress. Thanks for putting up with me...Happy Motoring
Old baldguy May 13th, 08, 06:08 AM Hi All,just a little update got the power brakes, done couple weeks ago,and got motor and Trans in this last weekend ,here are a couple pictures as I said I would ,should have her on the road by 3rd week of this month just taking my time. Thanks all in advance .Happy Motoring and good Health to All

lluciano77 May 13th, 08, 10:29 PM Well: he got back to me friday faxed me some numbers and combo's he suggested ,and I decided on the ZZ4 short block with the GM 12370847 Hyd Roller .539i/558e ,Dur@.05 234/242 112 deg CL ,AFR #10610 180cc /58cc chamb. (there not the Eliminator head ,he had this pair on his shelf new and couldn't refuse )I may have him add the AFR Rev kit. Intake Victor jr.,Comp ratio will be 10.0 to 1
I am sending my Dist and Carb to him as he is using me as a spect motor and Dynoing for nothing I said cool ,so I should be around 450 hp 440 torque ,I will keep you all posted with the outcome of the real numbers,I am excited :)....so what yo guys think ,I hope it all works out 6,289.00$ me 6 months and very few days off to make this happen
The AFR rev kit is unecessary. Jut get the right springs to begin with. If you read AFRs comparison the cam they used had the wrong springs to begin with. That is why is gained all the hp numbers.
The cam above is more like it. If you are going to run a roller cam you should take advantage of it. Run high lift/low duration. A roller cam with flat tappet lift to duration specs can actually end up making less power than the flat tappet equivalent. Friction reduction has nothing to do with a roller cam making more power. It is the advantage of the steeper ramps that makes them worth it.
Old baldguy May 14th, 08, 09:41 AM Thanks Kev:yes:,
lluciano I see what you are saying ,but this is what AFR say's about there REV Kits .
"It isn’t possible to properly control the valves and valve train by simply increasing valve spring pressure. This usually results in collapsed lifters. AFR has created a solution! The Hydra-Rev applies additional spring pressure to the lifter body, not the plunger. This vastly improves valvetrain stability which results in more power at higher RPM without any loss in low end torque"
So for what I think I gained (as told to me by the engine builder) vs what I spent for the rev kit 230.00 , was cheap HP gain and insurance to the valve train ,I am no engine guru here just know what reading I do. The Motor dynoed out @ 515hp @ 6300RPM and 478 ft. lbs T @ 4,800 RPM ( if I remember correctly on Torque RPM ..Thank you for you input ,that's how we all learn, and I appreciate it .Happy Motoring:)
italiano362 May 14th, 08, 07:13 PM That thing is gonna rip. I have 540 hp with the TKO 600 and 3:55 rears and it is more than I need. You cant really wring it out because of the wicked power and every drive always ends up with your heart in your throat!
Old baldguy May 23rd, 08, 11:53 AM Hi all : I am Ready to start her up I hope Saturday or Sunday ,Its been a long fun and sometimes stressfull ride, I would of posted some pictures this week as I have put in some long hours afterwork ,but I need one of the girls to download pictures to my thumb drive then I can do the photo bucket thing, but the wife and girls have been gone to Mississippi with other folks from our Church doing fellowship work helping people still in need from Hurricane Katrina so I will do next week hope you all that have looked in have enjoyed the ride ..Happy Motoring and a safe and wonderful weekend

prostreet69camaro May 27th, 08, 07:03 AM Jerome,
Car looks great. Now you can have some fun with it. Weather is nice. Time to go cruisin. Thanks for keeping us updated.
Fred Ficarra May 27th, 08, 01:17 PM Jerome, radar shows that you've been rained-on since the first drive. Don't let that stunning car get wet!
Old baldguy May 28th, 08, 06:12 AM Thanks Mike ,same back at you ,Your welcome I hope it was enjoyed, safe and Happy Motoring to you.:)
Fred ,how you doin ,did you get the car back out ???,as long as you were talking about wet,I think the last time it was wet, was when I wet sanded back in 98,it been sitting in the garage since,so a few more shake down trips local and she's ready for some cruising, oh yah I got the fual pump gasket in last nite ,:o,now no extra parts on the shelf :hurray:,she sounds good at idel 800rpm nice lope ,but come's alive only got to about 4,000 rpm as need to be easy on the Trans suggest 500 miles of lower RPM driving ,I put a 5400 rpm chip in my rev limiter just for safety for the motor well under the safe zone...well guy's its been a long road and I hope I can enjoy for the summer ,and then its interior time this winter stock original need to be updated.Happy Safe Healthy Motoring to All :)
DougP May 28th, 08, 06:34 AM Jerome -- looks great  -- congrats on getting the car running -- just in time to enjoy the summer driving season
