Hello everyone, my name is Brantly and I am posting this under my dad's membership. I am 19 years old and a full time college student. I just bought my first 67 camaro and I am taking off the vinyl top. I removed the top and then started removing the glue with goo gone and another adheshive remover. All of the glue didn't come off so I started removing the rest with a DA sander. My question is this, when I sanded the roof area, it took off the glue and in some area down to the metal, so what do I do next. Do I go ahead and treat this area with metal etching primer and then epoxy primer? I just want to keep it from rusting for right now until I can get back to it later. The roof is in great shape but on the sails it had small bubbles that caused small pits when I sanded it. How do I clean out these pits because the sander want get into them and I don't want to over sand? I tried reading previous threads but I still need your advice? Thanks, Brantly

When I do mine I strip them to bare metal and use a metal etching primer and then a epoxy primer. Sand area where any body work needs to be done prime with epoxy again and use a good guide coat a long board block with 180 if all looks good prime again and your there.

Thanks Dave, Do you recommend a particular brand of metal etching primer and epoxy primer? What do you mean by guide coat? Sorry for the ignorance but this is my first car and body work restoration.

Brantly if any of the pics in my Vinyl Top folder (http://www.carsbyjim.com/storage/VinylTop/) help you, have a look. I ripped my top off, sanded down with 3m pads on a drill, down to bare metal and then used the POR products, etcher and degreaser and then a coat of POR. Then off the my body shop guy who did these tops in the 70's for a living. He finished it all off for me along with the paint I needed, since 69's have a part of body color showing between the gutter and chrome trim.
Good luck.

The steps I mention are for not outing the top back on.I would not recommend por-15 this is when your reinstalling the vinyl.I use glasurit but you can go to any local auto paint supplier and try,but you may find they wont sell it to you. If this is the case you can buy on line.PPG, sikkens, basf,Matrix, just start with an etching and put it on as soon as you strip or the metal will collect moisture and possibly bubble down the road.I used sikkens at first and then switched to glasurit because my buddies wife works for Basf which supplies glasurit.
