View Full Version : JimM's garage cam
JimM Jan 20th, 08, 08:14 AM is on the air again!
To recap the weekend, Friday, I installed and degreed my new cam.
Saturday, I pulled it all apart again, having decided I really should clean out the shortblock. Clean rotating finished being installed in clean short block at midnight last night.
This morning, we will degree the cam one last time, and proceed from there.
I've just found out today's show will be cut short. Seems around 1 I get to go to a cub scout outing ar Oddesey fun world, where I will play laser tag, crawl around in tubes, do some video games and eat bad pizza... sigh.
DragRacer Jan 20th, 08, 09:57 AM Jim,
That is pretty darn cool!
Have fun with the kiddos, they are only young once. I know what you mean though. I had an "officially approved - garage day" yesterday and still got read the riot act this morning for working on the car too much. :(
JimM Jan 20th, 08, 05:16 PM Sorry I checked out wittout saying goodbye... Odysey fun world was big fun.
Before I left, I got the cam degreed again, and then started working on end play and buttons and things. Initially I had a ton of endplay. After somebrainstorming with a couple friends, I put a 5/16" flat washer behind the cam button, in the hole in the gear, up against the cam. The washer moved the buttom out just enough, end play is perfect now.
Cloyes Hex a Just timing set review: This thing is cool because you can adjust it so accurately. It's uncool because you HAVE TO adjust it so accurately. It uses an eccentric bushing that slips over the cam's dowel pin, and you turn the bushing to advance and retard the cam. You get + - 6 degrees or so.
The eccentric is sloppy. There's maybe 2 degrees of slop in the fit. The thing rely's on the bolts being tight to keep it all in the same place, and the directions specify RED locktite, which I used.
I can't see this thing being of any use at all for trackside tuning. Without a degree wheel and dial indicator, you are toast. You can't just loosen it up and turn the eccentric a lil, no way.
It's in there, and it's staying in there, but I would never buy another one.
Going back out to the garage now, time to bolt down the timing cover, oil pump and pickup, and oil pan.
Camera is on.
Badbird Jan 20th, 08, 05:37 PM Jimmy, sure wish I could view your garage cam but I can't!....Do you have to be a VIP member or something?

nope... just click the link, and enter the user name and password (team & camaro) There is an active x control that must be installed. If you don't get a prompt, look nearthe top of the explorer windows for a gray bar, click there and install the active x. Once that is installed it will come up. The cam box may be blak at first, if it is, just click in the box or hit the spaebar, and the video will come up.
The wife declared must feed her. Jusy back from a local feeding grounds, picking up wrenches now.
RickD Jan 21st, 08, 05:38 AM Living through you, Jim! Wow - red locktite. I never use, usually, anything but blue. They really should of said hex-not-a-just.
JimM Jan 21st, 08, 07:02 PM Not quite sure how it got to be near 8pm all ready, but I'm up for 2 hours of garage time!
Since I'm delayed on the pan waiting for an oil pickup that fits, tonights agenda will include wrestling with a valve spring compressor, for to fit checking springs on a couple valves, then measuring for pushrods and checking piston to valve clearance with a wad of silly putty.
Camera is on. Jim's garage cam (http://71.194.154.8:12000/) chat room is open chat (http://www.camaros.net/forums/2chat/flashchat.php)
RaceHome Jan 21st, 08, 08:59 PM This is a great idea! :)

JimM Jan 21st, 08, 09:26 PM Piston to valve clearance came out fine, and my pushrods measured at 7.1"
We filled up the chat room pretty good, too.
