: Removing decals?

I have an 86 Z28 and it has the infamous striped decal all the way around the bottom of the car just above the ground effects. Besides a heat gun what would be the next best method?

Thanks in advance, Jim

3M makes a rubber wheel that removes decals. You put it on a drill motor. The one from Eastwood doesn't work as well.

I removed the decal from my truck by letting it sit outside on a sunny day. I was able to lift an edge and peel it off. Then some WD40 removed the leftover sticky junk which was pretty minimal.

If you are planning on repainting the car try a sander that would problary be real easy!

You would problary want to start with maybe an 80 grit and work your way up to 120 grit.

80 Grit is too aggressive. If you plan on repaint, use a heat gun to peel the decal off and then use lacquer thinner with a red 3M scotchbrite pad to remove the glue. Sanding the decal off may embed the glue and decal deeper into the paint and cause problems when you paint. The 3M wheel is great if you do not plan on painting.

3M also makes an adhesive remover (solvent) to take off the left over glue. Works a little better then the WD40.

I agree with Allen. You should not sand off anything except the painted surface, and that should be clean and free of all contaminants otherwise you may (or your painter) may have lifting and adhesion problems down the road.

3M makes two products - one to remove 'woodgrain' panels (it soaks through the decals) and a second that removes left over adhesive. I used this combo on a truck and it worked great. I don't remember the part#, but I do remember the woodgrain decal remover was one number off of the adhesive remover part#. Any professional auto paint supplier should have it.
