View Full Version : 67 SS Traction Bar bracket placement? - Need picture
shoe Jan 20th, 08, 10:39 PM My SS had the floor plate and traction bar bracket removed when the shop did the whole pan (they saved both parts for me). Now I need to reconnect, but the guy I bought the car from took the round rod off and removed the bracket from the 12 bolt. I see the rod and tube bracket in the catalogs, but not sure where to weld the bracket on the axle tube.
Help is greatly appreciated, pictures would be extra nice.

On the chance that someone thinks I am trying to fake an SS, I can e-mail you the pictures of the original floor and pan plate so you know it is for real. Trim tag as well.
You could then private e-mail the info so we don't help the frauds out there. Just trying to clean up some of the crap on this and put it back original (that is, except for the Hotchkis kit going in)

shoe Jan 21st, 08, 09:24 PM I have it, but it just isn't the same as a real picture. I'm not that sharp (and the manual pics are weak).

shoe Jan 22nd, 08, 06:54 PM Thanks, it is very different than what I thought it would look like. Really appears to hang down low. No wonder they cut mine off, probably gets in the way.

Everett#2390 Jan 23rd, 08, 04:17 AM Really appears to hang down low. shoeAs long as it does not exceed the radius of the wheel (go past the rim), its fine - NHRA rules. They don't want anything touching the ground with flat tires or tireless wheels.
clwilcox33 Jan 23rd, 08, 06:46 AM Here's a couple pics of the bracket on the rear end.

I couldn't find any of the interior bracket on the floor pan, but if someone doesn't post any by this weekend I'll see if I can get out to my shop and get some pics for you. You can look through all the pics I have and see if you can find one but I didn't see any skimming through them:

shoe Jan 23rd, 08, 09:39 PM Please don't go to any more trouble, those pics are excellent. I took pictures of the floor plate before we cut out the whole pan, and have a pretty good idea where it should go back. On the radius rod itself, it looks like it is just a simple straight steel rod. I better make sure everything is attached before I do any welding on the axle tube...

clwilcox33 Jan 24th, 08, 07:38 AM Well there were two types of radius rods used. A round one and a square one. The CRG lists when they were used. Here's the article, and some more pictures:

Daral Jan 24th, 08, 11:50 AM Jeff - I sent you an Email with a pdf file containing the Dealer Service Technical Bulletin. It gives the exact location of the radius rod and provides instructions on how to install it.
clwilcox33 Jan 24th, 08, 12:21 PM Daral, will you send that to me too? I'll toss it up on my website for future reference. Thanks.

shoe Feb 3rd, 08, 10:16 AM Thanks again everyone. The pans were finished last week, just waiting for them to put the rear end back on so I can tow it home.
I hate to now cut this big hole in the new pan to weld the original traction plate back in. Thinking maybe I'll just drill the bolt holes only and slip those through for the mounting bracket instead of trying to re-weld the hole plate on. Then I can just tack in in from inside the car and be done with it.
Looking at Christropher's pictures you can't really see the plate from underneath so maybe it never was cut out and the plate welded in the first place? I might be accidentally be on the right track!
Has anyone ever seen the axle tube bracket for sale? That is the one part that wasn't saved.

Geezer Feb 3rd, 08, 10:47 AM The floor pans wern't cut out. Two holes were drilled and the reinforcement plate with the studs were spot welded to the top of the floor pan. the floor pan or reinforcement plate would be flimsy alone...

Thanks Larry
