View Full Version : Real deal DOCUMENTED 69 L-89 w/ 22k original miles
Bgonz 69 Jan 23rd, 08, 02:36 PM A friend of mine is thinking of selling his unrestored original paint 69 L-89 SS 396 Camaro. The car is fathom green and just about as original as you will ever find. Aside from the belts, tires and battery its all original. Its a true survivor 3 owner car that has never been showed. It was featured in a magazine recently but other than that its been in hiding for the last 25 years and still wears its 1971 inspection sticker . He has all the original dealer paperwork including the original protecto plate and the dealer order invoice. Whats something like this REALLY worth in todays market ???? I cant imagine there are many to choose from :D
By the way I believe he may have listed it on Ebay, So if anyone can find it please post the link.
Thanks much............
bob
thorpe67RS Jan 23rd, 08, 02:53 PM WOW..150k..?? Maybe more..sound about right?? Youd be pretty hard pressed to find a original 69 L-89 with 22k anywhere else. Rare, Rare car indeed. Lucky bastard!! If you compare it to the mopar/hemi stuff it should go for a heck of a lot more than 150k in my opinion. Ive seen low mileage LS-6 Chevelles go for over 300k in the past few years. Should be comparible in my opinion. Where is your friend (the car) located?

Jonesy Jan 23rd, 08, 03:29 PM No exactly the best ad for selling a car of that stature. Could have added more pics and info to the description. Sounds like a decent car???
Gary L Jan 23rd, 08, 03:31 PM Rare indeed. What kind of wheels/hubcaps? Hard to tell.
thorpe67RS Jan 23rd, 08, 03:32 PM I agree...that add is horrible. Barely a description and no pics. How easy it would be to talk a car like that up.
68Baldwin Jan 23rd, 08, 03:58 PM Wasn't this car bought from Mark Chevrolet in Whitehouse NJ when new??
Bgonz 69 Jan 23rd, 08, 04:04 PM Rare, Rare car indeed. Lucky bastard!! Where is your friend (the car) located?
LUCKY............. If you only knew what he paid for it 25 years ago :D
And people thought he got ripped off
No exactly the best ad for selling a car of that stature. Could have added more pics and info to the description. Sounds like a decent car???
He's obviously new to Ebay, he's a true car guy....... Definitely not a used car salesman :D
Rare indeed. What kind of wheels/hubcaps? Hard to tell.
I think they are dog dishes.
I agree...that add is horrible. Barely a description and no pics. How easy it would be to talk a car like that up.
He's just getting the car out there. If you know what it really is and have that kind of money, you really need to check it out in person anyways. I think he's gonna add a bunch of pics. He was supposed to email me a bunch but never did. Its SUPER, SUPER nice
Any predictions on value ?????
Does it really even have one ????

Leonard1 Jan 23rd, 08, 04:10 PM Here's another one, the owner is a member here. Not sure if it sold or not.

nikkisdad Jan 23rd, 08, 04:13 PM I clearly have a great interest in watching this auction, but like others have said the add pretty much sucks. Besides needing pictures of the documentation, more car pics, and maybe the magazine articles, using a seller name that has 0 zero feedback is a clear disadvantage. My thoughts are someone will contact him and buy it off the e-bay site when it does not meet the reserve because of the add. Of course this could be just a way of presenting it too the public before going to a Barrett Jackson, silver, or other auction. Maybe he and I should meet up at a track with our unrestored L89's and race for pinks! lol............naw, it would never fly with the old lady.
alanrw Jan 23rd, 08, 04:18 PM Hopefully, he can document the milage. It is not difficult to turn back the odometer on these cars.

I have an original 1969 factory dealer Chevrolet foldout brochure, best I can tell they are dog-dish with trim rings just like my brochure.
DjD Jan 23rd, 08, 04:29 PM Actually the ebay ad is only not good for a TCer wanting to look it over... :D I think any interested buyer will be in direct contact with the seller and making arrangements to see and be filled in on the details. Think about it, if you were in the market for an unrestored greater than $100k Camaro the pictures are not important, you'd want much more proof than a well written description and pictures that can make a car look 1000 times better than it is...
Oh, the green car in the second auction is Charlie's (clill here), check out his Mustang auction  I'll be glad to test drive any car he has for sale and report back if needed... :D
Gary L Jan 23rd, 08, 04:45 PM No exactly the best ad for selling a car of that stature. Could have added more pics and info to the description. Sounds like a decent car???
I agree...that add is horrible. Barely a description and no pics. How easy it would be to talk a car like that up.
Sometimes understated is better. The bid prices are speaking loudly. I bet he is geting a ton of questions ..... how much will you take right now?
Nothing says muscle better than painted wheels and dish hubcaps. I did that to a 1969 Dart 340 Swinger I used to have. E70/14 tires.
Microgiant Jan 23rd, 08, 05:55 PM I agree...that add is horrible. Barely a description and no pics. How easy it would be to talk a car like that up.
I agree also, but it appears the car is selling itself. Its already up to 115k.
phel69 Jan 23rd, 08, 07:00 PM I think that Charlie's car is a more appealing color BUT the other car is much more original per the ad, no repaint, no restamp. I would buy any high dollar car from Charlie, his ads are honest to a fault. He is a straight shooter. I would think the fathom green car should be close to 200K if it is as original as stated and can be verified.
clill Jan 23rd, 08, 07:22 PM LOL....I should describe my car as it was described to me......
Microgiant Jan 23rd, 08, 09:03 PM I was thinking (it happens sometimes):p, If your paying that much for a car your going to fly out and see it in person and hand them the check in person. Maybe bring a expert if your smart. Whats a extra grand for first class when your spending 150?
frankk Jan 23rd, 08, 09:47 PM I agree with Dennis. Thats the smart thing to do.

Also a valid point. I was just eager to go look at pics and read about it. But im certainly not a buyer. As mentioned, any buyer of this car is not going to buy it based solely on any ad..no matter how good it is. But then again, nobody should do that no matter what the car IMHO.
Old Man Jan 24th, 08, 06:43 AM Wow, oh to be in his shoes. This is a Barrett Jackson car if there ever was one. It's amazing that a car like that is still all original and in that kind of condition today. I'd give my left....well you know for a car like that. I like the Phathom green but I have to agree with some of the others I like the rallye green better, it just pops.
Unreal Jan 24th, 08, 09:54 AM I suspect it will top $200K---but not on ebay. One of the big boys is probably already heading to Princeton towing a trailer, and carrying a wad of cash.

I agree. The best cars are private sales most of the time. I doubt Charley bought them off of ebay. Maybe I am wrong.
RSSSfanatic Jan 24th, 08, 06:33 PM Oh, the green car in the second auction is Charlie's (clill here),
He didn't buy the Rally Green car from a guy in Kentucky, did he? That looks an awful lot like a car I looked at about 10 years ago. That car was also a RG L89 with M-22, VT, etc. I also seem to remember the same story about the owner having totalled a similar car. I could have bought the car that I was looking at for around $30K back then. It was being sold by the same individual who sold me my RS/SS 396 conv.
clill Jan 24th, 08, 06:39 PM Yes it was in Ky, same car. Is your convert red and from Ca ? I actually missed out on my car on Ebay a few years ago for I think 90K. Didn't have the cash to buy it.
wagonman Jan 24th, 08, 09:37 PM i like the rally sport one better......
if i compared them pound for pound.
if both had original drivetrains...etc....
i would take the rally sport.
Z10396 Jan 25th, 08, 12:11 AM I will take either or, I am not very fussy. Actually, I also like the Ralleye Green, I painted a Jeep that I have that color. I would also consider spraying my '69 that color but being that it is a Z10 it just wouldn't be right!
RSSSfanatic Jan 25th, 08, 04:52 AM Clill,
Yes, my conv is indeed garnet red w black top and interior, and it spent most of its life in the San francisco area. There is a shot of it in the convertible roll call section near the last page. The guy I bought it from is a local collector, who brings in a LOT of nice cars from the west coast. I believe he still has an original paint low mileage garnet red RS/SS L89 car, and he told me that he sold an L89 conv many years ago before the market started to take off. I bet he would like to get that one back!
rod67ss Jan 25th, 08, 06:36 AM The article with more pics -

Ha !! I turned that guy onto your red car. When I turned him onto your car I stipulated that he was not to buy my old Daytona yellow-white houndstooth SS396 AC car as I was trying to buy it back. Next thing I know he has bought both cars. Said he forgot or some other stupid reason. I let it go. A few years later he screwed me on what he said was a real 396 Pace car but was really a P.O.S smallblock car. He played stupid again. He has been dealing in Camaro's for probably 30 years now and playing stupid on a big block stuffed in a smallblock car was the last straw for me. In hindsight I realize he bought that yellow car knowing he wasn't supposed to but the profit he probably made from it was worth more than friendship. To this day I tell people what a P.O.S he is. Your red convert is a great car that the P.O.S bought from Simon Thornton. Simon was in Sebastopol but has since moved to Reno and is no longer into cars.
The L89 convert he sold went to Otis Chandler and is now in Wa.
thorpe67RS Jan 25th, 08, 08:18 AM check out his Mustang auction  I'll be glad to test drive any car he has for sale and report back if needed... :D
Holy Crap!! Nice car Charley!!

I hear one of the big boyz is in a Sikorsky Blackhawk hovering over his house with a special rig that can scoop up the car without landing! :)
clill Jan 25th, 08, 01:02 PM My car was described to me just about the same way this Fathom green car is being described only mine was described as mostly orig. paint and 17K miles. The Fathom car looks great but wrong tires, space saver spare appears to be added, black brake booster, wrong rad cap. All stuff that is easy fixes but I would want to look at it in person and see the engine pad stamping etc. If it is indeed as described it is a great car.

Wow! Sorry to hear about that! I was just a buyer, so I guess I was really lucky that things worked out for me. Do you know if Simon bought it from the second owner? The second owner lived in S.F. and kept an extensive log book on everywhere he drove the car. I also have a receipt from when the car was about a week old that has the original owner's name and address on it. I would love to fish around and turn up some old pictures of it back when it had the original paint on it. I have always wondered if it had the SS stripes on it originally. So far i have not turned up any evidence that it did, but I would expect it to have a "--" paint code if it was a stripe delete car.
That Rally Green car that you have is really sweet. That is one of my favorite colors for the old cars. I can't tell you how badly I wanted that car, but couldn't spring for $30K back then. Sure seems like chump change now! That picture of it from back in the 80's at the drag strip is really cool.
Good luck with your auctions.
clill Jan 25th, 08, 08:40 PM I have his # at home somewhere. I will look for it when I get back.

Charley, you could write a book and boy do I wish  I could remember facts, names, places, etc. like you do.
:beers:
