I want a new engine for my street/strip 68 Camaro. I found these three on ebay they look like bargains. Which will get me to the end of the quarter mile quicker? Currently running a 396 which I'm told is good for 500 HP runs 12.30 108mph with 373 gears and terrible 60fts. (1.8's) spinning a little. Hoping to make the high tens with one of these and some wrinkle walls.

Any Thoughts? Thanks!

After reading through the description of engine "B" the builder states that it is a 496 but in the list of machine work he states that the block was only bored .030 over...making it a 489 not a 496.

Not really a big deal, just something i noticed.

Engine "A" doesnt really give a detailed description.

Engine "c" is the one I would personally pick just because of the size and the parts that are in it.

Ditto. I've always thought a 502 block would be a good way to start a budget 540 build. They're around a grand from GM, less than half what a (stronger) Dart block costs. This can be a great way for you to save some green and still get a 540.

I don't like the "best flowing" dual plane intake on the first engine. I think when you get to this level you're certainly talking single plane territory.

This is just me, but I love horsepower. When people start talking how much low speed torque their BBC makes, it tells me they either don't know how to make power or they haven't ponied up for serious equipment. Really, how much low speed torque does a big block Camaro need?

My 2 cents... Investigate a 406/408 sbc w/ nice 23* heads, 11:1 compression, a decent cam, etc. Always a great top 10's street strip platform.

Good luck.

You could pull the heads off of your 396 and put them on this:

And save some money in the long run. However, I can't personally vouch for or against this brand. Maybe somebody on here has bought one and can weigh in?

500 hp should get you to a considerably higher mph in the 1/4, somewhere north of 120.

Looks like your pushing was a joke but all kidding aside, its probably known to everyone but, watch out if your planning to buy on ebay. I was almost robbed I was given a second chance offer and was told the shipping would be cut in half because I wanted to pick the motor up ,the guy I talked to over the phone was in a different state than the motor and there were a lot of misleading things that almost cost me $7500. Make sure all your ducks are in a row and watch your self I almost sent the money western union and the owner of the motor contacted me at the western union right before I was giving the teller the money. Check the sellers feedback, contact them several times and just be carefull I hpe this is helpfull and not a pain in the a$$. Good luck with your motor I think you would look nice with a small 572.

Your #2 & #3 choices appear to be using the Pro Comp heads. Research those, they're cheap chinese knock-offs and poor quality, IMHO. Do you not have a local shop that you can trust?

If that motor is making 500 horses in a 68 Camaro, then you should be running in the 11's in my opinion.

My 67 chevelle with a 350 and 4 speed runs 12.5 quarters. It is only pushing 425 horse.

Fwiw, a 475 is a 454 overbored .100".

That 502 shortblock look's to be a winner in my book for a mild to a stout street engine.

I'd use an aftermarket block if I wanted a "balls-out" engine tho, just b/c of strength.

I gotta agree with the others. With a 396 supposedly near 500 horse you would be better off spending money on the rest of the drivetrain to get a lower et. The 3.73's are too tall and you don't mention if you have frame connectors or traction devices or if you are using wrinkle walls now. What trans and if auto do you have a stall converter ?? For what you are considering spending on a new motor you could do a lot of upgrading and probably come close to your goal. Putting a monster motor in it with it's current rear gear is only going to get a lot more wheel spin and not much lower et.

stay with bbc for ease of the swap. Source a block and have a budget 496 built locally. Stay with a conservative intake port and build a good fuel/exhaust system for it. Your current motor is more like 375HP.

I have bought two motors similar to what was listed. Combined they lasted less than 6500 miles. My next will be 100% new, top quality parts and roller cam. Will cost me more money but hopefully worth it.

I only made it to the track this year the last 2 weekends. Motor hasn't been tuned. I figured 400hp rear wheel for the engine. The 500 that was advertised I figured was at the crank. The motor runs strong I think with a tune and slicks its probely good for high 11's. I'm currently running a turbo 400 I had built with TCI street fighter 3600 to 3800 stall speed. I ran Mickey Thompson's new street radial 275/17's with if I remember correctly 17lbs. of pressure. The car has sub frame connectors, ladder bars and was purpose built. Its an old drag car. I want a new engine beause I don't know enough about this one. I was going to add nitrous (150) shot. but decided not to because I don't know what kind of bottom end it has. I had a buyer for the motor last year for $3000 I turned it down at the time. I want to sell it for $3000, and for another 2 to 3 grand buy something that I could get better results from and sleep at night knowing how it was built. Lots of great info and suggestions. I know you get what you pay for and these 3 looked a little too good to be honest. I'd like to do something within a budget of $3000. What would that short block 502 yield that rich suggested. Any guess at HP? Thanks again, Jeff

Hi rickybobby,

A very timely post! I bought my new 454/ 475 from Vortecpro on ebay. The builder is Mark Jones, in Colorado, and is a great guy...plus I couldn't find a better deal for the money. He put together a virtually turnkey package with carb/ msd distributor & coil/ water pump etc for under $6k...fully dyno'd with sheet to prove the figures are right on the money!
I went for the 'budget' package- 570 Hp/ 588 Tq...plenty stout for me...(dyno sheet shows a minimum of 540 Tq from 3500 rpm- all the way to 5700).

It took longer to build than expected- and ages to ship to the UK...but that's mainly cos Mark does all the work himself and doesn't farm it out- and he stayed in touch with me throughout to apologise for the delays! We spoke before I bought the engine, and I got a good positive feeling about him and his knowledge of engine building. I looked at every other option- T&L engines,
South Coast high, Engine factory, Proformance unlimited, Bill Mitchell etc... and no one came close for the budget

I'm firing it up on tuesday so hoping all will be ok!...I'll let you know!...

PM me if you want any other info
