I've did a search and didn't find much for upgrade on this motor. I'm looking for recommendations on a cam and possibly rocker upgrade to the 350/290HP GM crate motor. I'm replacing the 76cc heads with a set of 64cc 1.95/1.50 heads from 1970 that should bump the compression to around 9.5:1. While the heads are off, I thought I may benefit from a better cam? Below is what is has now. I'm on a tight budget as always:)

Camshaft duration (@.050 in):222 degree intake / 222 degree exhaust
Camshaft lift (in): .450 intake / .460 exhaust
Camshaft Part Number: 3896962
Camshaft type: Hydraulic flat tappet
Compression ratio: 8.5:1

I see the cam that GM uses in the 350/330HP motor is a bit different and is less than $100, but have no idea if it would be better with my heads.
Camshaft duration (@.050 in):212 degree intake / 222 degree exhaust
Camshaft lift (in):.435 intake / .460 exhaust

Thanks,
Dan

I think that second cam is a roller cam. Mabee get a pocket port if the heads are still off. Or just bite the bullet and get alluminum. Although your on a budget, you will get the power that you will be chasing all summer.

24502476 Hyd. 212/220 .435"/.460" 9.1:1 112.5 350/300 CC crate motor cam is a standard hy-lifter cam, not a roller.

I figure it will be a lot better than the old -962, 350hp/360hp/350 hy-cam.

3896962 Hyd. 222/222 .450"/.460" 8.5:1 114 350 L-46, L-82.. Imho, it really need's at least 10 to 1 and preferably 11 to 1 like it used to have to run like it should.

PS., and I'd use .015" or .020" thick shim headgaskets too! Fel-pro's PN 1094, .015" for aluminum and cast-iron heads and the .020" steel shims for cast-iron heads.

Thanks pdq67 and slow 67. This motor is going in a 70 Nova that I don't plan on doing much to and don't have hardly any money invested in so far. I have a +30 454 going in one Camaro and a 400 I'm planning on building for the other if I don't find another BBC first.

Any problems running 93 octane in a 9.5:1 or higher with the new levels of Ethanol? I've talked to some people who say they are getting detonation they never got before? They are having to mess with their timing to adjust?

I thought about going with perhaps Edelbrock or a set of Alum heads from EBay, but I have $200 into these rebuilt heads. I want to keep the total cost of the motor under $1500.
