View Full Version : Strange Light/Gauge Behavior

'68 Speedo/Tach issues (with tic-toc-tac): When the headlights are off, the tach works. As soon as they're turned on, it stops working.

When the headlights are on, the left turn signal dash light comes on (solid, not blinking). Only the left one - the right signal dash light doesn't. In fact the right one doesn't work at all, either when the headlights are on, or when the right turn signal is on.

The left turn signal dash light doesn't blink when the left signal is engaged (though the left and right outside lights work fine).

The speedometer doesn't work, and only some of the gauges in the consol gauge package seem to be accurate (gas is mostly ok I think - temp, amps, and oil I think have problems).

Any ideas? Or is it just a matter of running every wire/connection down to see where it goes wrong?

You have a number of problems.

Bad dash cluster ground.
Bad ground at left front parking light.
Mechanical problem with speedo or speedo cable.

Fix those and see how you do.

Thank you!

I know I'm new here and there's no doubt anything I ask will have been discussed ad nauseum elsewhere in the forum, but I did try a search and didn't find what I was looking for (I probably need to work on my searching skills!), so I do thank you both for taking the time to answer my questions! Much appreciated :)

The dash cluster ground is the top center screw between the speedo and tach. If it isn't making good contact the turn signal will illuminate like that.

3 things it could be:

Bad ground
Bad ground
Bad ground

:D

Don't overlook any grounds. Clean them all. Make sure you have adequate engine strap and chassis grounds too.

The easiest way to screw that one up is assembling the high beam /ground straps in the wrong order. The red lens has to go on first.
