trying hard to keep this 02 looking decent.car is in sunset orange metalllic.clear coat looks like its getting scratched all the time and i'm using recommendations for waxing by a top notch body shop. the wax is the 3M line;the compound if needed, the high gloss polish and then finally the wax..all clear coat specified and safe.yet still getting those swirls. are they unavoidable ? am i doing something wrong ? will i have to go to a detailer who uses an electric polisher/buffer to get the swirls out.can they be taken out ? there annoying.this car is garaged and i shouldn't have to deal with this. any suggestions ???? thanks...

You summed up your problem in the second line by mentioning "compound". What compound are you using? There is no need to use cleaners, compounds, or anything abrasive on a finish that is kept out of the elements. Swirl removers and cleaners have abrasives in them that are used to remove surface contaminants, oxidation, etc. Those days are over with the introduction of clay bars and wipe on deoxidizers.
Clearcoats are extremely soft...the mere act of drying the finish will leave swirl marks if the towels you use haven't been laundered properly, or are 100% cotton "made in China".
When buffing out a newly finished paint job, I use 2000 grit followed by 3M's Finesse-it II followed up by Imperial Micro-finishing glaze. Then, I just use a 3M's Fill and Glaze to remove the spider hair swirls that you see in the sun.
After that, I use a good straight wax to keep the paint protected and wet looking..no cleaners or swirl removers.

The only and I do mean only product I use and I swear it doesn't leave swirls is the 3M perfectit III. When sanding and buffing all the cars I paint, this is all I ever need to use, including black.
I buff with a foam cutting pad made by 3M applying liter pressure as the shine starts to come to life. I got real sick and tired of my back aching from buffing a car 3 times to finally get rid of all the swirls. The 3M #III is the only product I've found so far that doesn't leave a residue. This is alot of the times the swirl that you see, if not from the towel trying to get rid of the residue. It dissolves really good and doesn't sling hardly at all. If I want the compound to be a little bit gentler I'll take my spray bottle of water and use with it. Once you see it work I swear you'll be a believer. I've already turned a couple of other painters onto it and they love the results and ease. Kind of sounds like I'm a 3M prep. Just try it and you'll see.
Like the previous post said, you've got to really have good towels when working on the paint. Theres another product out that gives a hi gloss shine for waxing, and it's called Race Glaze. You can get it at almost any automotive paint store.

Good Luck
