View Full Version : How do you back adjust brakes 68cam327 Jan 29th, 08, 05:06 PM my brakes ar sticking and I think they need to be back adjusted. Can anyone tell me how to adjust them? Everett#2390 Jan 29th, 08, 07:05 PM At the bottom of the backing plate is a long rubber plug, about an inch long. Pull it out and shine a flashlight inside. You will see a starred wheel and a wide metal piece on the other side, the lug nut side. Stick in a slender screwdriver and push out the metal tab or metal piece. This metal tab is spring loaded and when brakes are used, the metal tab, called self adjuster, turns the star wheel and the action tightens up the brake shoes. I disgress, with the adjuster pushed out, use a brake spoon, or a 1/4 inch screwdriver, and insert the spoon into a tooth of the adjuster and pry up to unscrew the adjuster. Regardless the wheel being adjusted, pry up to unscrew or loosen the brakes. Several prys will do it. Brakes should have a slight drag when tire is rotated. An old tip is to adjust the brake tight, then back off 5-6 teeth. Experience is the key to proper adjustment. Another old tip; If you loosen the star wheel too much...you can back up (reverse) in your driveway and keep hitting the brakes to adjust the wheel tighter. Just like you're pumping them. When I replaced a wheel cylinder last summer...and then the shoes while I was at it...I ended up doing this very procedure that dad taught me when I was a teen :) |
