View Full Version : Pitman Arm Question (just to be sure)

I have the long (a little over 6"), slow ratio, steering arms that were factory issue on manual steering. I'm converting to power and have the moog idler that is approx 5 1/4" or 5 3/8".

I read where it's okay to use the fast ratio (5 3/4" or 5 7/8") pitman arm with the short idler. Seems to me this would make the center link not be parallel, but from what I've read, that's not a problem?

Can I use the long (fast) pitman with my set up? I just figured since I've got the long arms, the long pitman might help "quicken" up the steering a little for me. My box will probably be just the standard 3 to 3 1/2 turn.

Thanks in advance for any advice, thoughts, opinions.... Brian

Brian, you can search for more threads, but check out this one I found, as I think it may answer your question: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=111375&highlight=long+pitman+arm

Yes, I would use the long power pitman arm. Moog replacement idler arms are in-between length, so either long or short pitman would result in a slightly non-parallel center link.

A third gen type box with higher effort/ faster ratio would be a better choice, if you don't like the steering all that fast, use the short pitman with this box.

Thank you for the help!!

David, I considered going with the 3rd gen box after all of the threads I've read on it. I love the idea of a faster steering ratio with basically a factory appearance. At this point, I'm looking for more of a "correct" restoration and don't want to deal with using adapters for the fittings, etc... I've read a couple of threads where guys had troubles with leaks too.

My two biggest pet peeves are any kind of fluid or exhaust leak!!!!

Plus, I'm scared with a low horsepower 327 at idle turning the wheel to park, etc...could result in choking the motor and pump down with too fast a ratio?

Thanks, Brian
