Hello,

I was posting in the "Engine" section about the engine...I also posted this on there, but i think that here is a better place... so here it goes...

I went to take a look at the car today... the engine is a total waste,so if i go with this one..one of those crate engines or atleast another engine is the solution..all in all the car is ok (to my eyes) .. it hasn't been driven for 2 years.. it has some rust spots (like 3) one on the left fender, one on the right back and like on the window corner..for the rest the owner says that the chasis is rust free..the car is kind of in a good condition (especially for a 38 yr old car)... the lowest he will go ( in US $$) is $ 2.747
I don't know if this is a good deal or not..having in mind that a new engine is needed, some rust has to be taken care of and a new paint job (ofcourse the interior needs some work also)
anyways, let me know what you think about the car and the price..thanks !!

it has some rust spots (like 3) one on the left fender, one on the right back and like on the window corner..

Did you take a magnet? I don't see any shots of the rust areas in your photos, but I'd want to check rusty areas and other common rust areas (bottoms of fenders, bottoms of doors, bottoms of quarters and rear door jamb area, rear valence) for presence of body filler. Sometimes little rust bubbles aren't a big deal, but if the bubbles are just old rust that has been improperly repaired coming back, it can get ugly quick.

for the rest the owner says that the chasis is rust free..

Didn't you crawl under and around to see as best you could the condition of the floors, trunk floor, rockers, etc.?

How much of the project can you do yourself or with the help of friends who work for beer?

If the car is solid and only needs cosmetics and an engine, the deal isn't too bad. You can still get upside down (more money invested than market value) in a 2nd gen pretty easily, because the market isn't as high as the 1st gens. There's probably $10,000 to $15,000 of work there to have a pretty nicely resto-modded driver.

Figure $3K for a motor, unless you can get and live with a basic replacement engine like this: http://paceperformance.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=224002 . Nice and dependable, I'm not sure you need more on an island...

That website (www.paceparts.com) has a nice selection of crate engines to look through and get an idea what's out there.

Where I live we use GUILDERS ... 1 US $$ = 1.82 GUILDERS

He was asking 7.000 GUILDERS for it and we talked and he would let it go for 5.000 GUILDERS because he said I'm young and he doesnt want to sell it to someone who will use it for Dragracing ...

and 5.000 GUILDERS devided by 1.81 = around 2.747 US DOLLARS

My opinion the price of the car will be the cheapest thing on a restoration/build. Sit down with a pencil, paper and a parts book and figure your labour costs for work you may not be able to do. Hope you can go for it.

I would like to know where you guys buy motors for 3K ..WOW.. my 71 Camaro's motor "327" was fubar also... I went to a junk yard .. paid 20 bucks for a Fubar 350 block "Core" ... went to a place where they rebuild motors.. Got me a nice rebuilt 350 for 400 bucks. put all the goodies on it ... was less than a grand.

p.s. I paid 2,700 for mine in 2003.

that 3K motor is new new new....but yeah i should consider rebuilding one...

so you have a 1971 one also ... and when you paid 2,700 for it.. was it in the same state as the one on the pictures or was it in a worse state?

The car was still in the 70's era .. it even came with the Foot print Gas Pedal and Cherry bombs as mufflers. !!!

Heres the day I purchased it, still at the previous owners house...

hey Victor , you asked how much did it cost up to that point.??

Paint materials around 250 bucks .. "I painted it myself.. 1st time painting a car.":D

recovered my seats.. 100 for materials .. 250 labor .. yes 250.. Im so close to the border of mexico .. hint hint ... they all know how to recover seats for cheap!!

New dash , small spoiler .. misc stuff from classic industries .. around 700 bucks.

New rebuilt motor 350 bucks.... "I did the labor"

so give or take around 1,700 bucks.!!

I still need those rims you see in the Pic.!! the pic of the rims are photochoped on there.... I wish I had those rims right now.!!

Good luck on your 71............ p.s. over at www.nastyz28.com they are pure 2nd gen camaro members there... they know there stuff on these years.!!

How are the rear frame rails? Just curious, the last two 2nd gens we had were ate up and required new rails.

Check the rear frame rails real good, they are the first thing that leads to major problems on the 2nd gen cars.
