Could the starter sound like an Uzi? If so, the cause could be a corroded battery cable connection on either cable between the cable terminal and the surface its in contact, or a bad cable altogether.

Any bit of corrosion between the two and it creates a high resistance junction, voltage drops, and the joint itself becomes hot to the touch and gives off heat. You find corrosion, lift off the ground cable, the black one, clean both ends, leave disconnected, and clean the positive cable, both ends. Then connect the postive cable first, then connect the ground cable.

Another problem can be those clamp-on battery post terminals, asking for trouble there. When you have the red cable off the starter solenoid, clean all the terminals of the fusible links on the solenoid stud.

Let us know what happens.
