Hey all,
Does a '69 Z-28 sit lower than a '69 SS 4-speed non air car?
My '69 SS seems to sit too high in the front. Would Z-28 springs drop it some
or is it just a trick of the eye because a Z runs a 15 inch wheel and tire and the SS has 14 inch. Just seems to me that every Z I have seen hardly has any wheel well opening above the tire in the front compared to a SS. Now I'm talking the use of all factory springs. Any other factory springs that would drop it some, but not using a six cylinder spring. I see so many choices in Rick's catalog. Any advice would be great.

Z28's are lower (at least in 69, probably all years) even with the larger tires, hence the need for the rear bumper guards to bring the bumper height back up to DOT requirements.

Do a search for 6308, or 6320 for spring heights.

All this info can be found in A10 page 0 of the '69 AIM.

The Z/28 'J' measurement [front trim height, curb] is 9.13"; a '69 with F70 x 14 tires is 9.24". The Z/28 'K' measurement [rear trim height, curb] is 8.75"; F70 is 8.72". All dimensions have a range of +/- .38". G31 rear springs add to both F70 measurements.

So the base SS is about the same in back; very slightly higher in front.

From what I understand (through some readings) ... The cars spring are based on as they have said "curb height" ... Additional options such as A/C for instance requires different springs to maintain curb heights ... Look over the car ... What engine did was it deiverd with, what do you have now ... Blah Blah ... I hadn't heard that of the Z/28 but that could make some sense ... Since all Z/28's come with the tall bumper guards DID YOU HEAR THAT ALL YOU Z/28 CLONERS !!! ...

Thanks guys,
To me all the Z's i see the tire seems more tucked in the front fender well.
Who would you all contact to talk springs and spring rates? I want to figure this out once and for all. Thanks guys.

According to RamAirDave:

The front springs are Moog 6308, and the rears are the original 4 leafs. I had them apart to restore, but didnt have them arched.

From center of the wheel to the fender lip trim:

Front: 12.5" Rear: 13.25"

This was for the yellow Z 69Metalman chronicalled on his rebuild. The stance on that car is perfect. Remember, he is using 15" YH rims. If you are staying with 14", it will look different. According to Dave, the springs are readily available.

Also, in my Classic Industry catalog, in the spring section, they take options such as a/c, power steering etc into consideration when selecting springs as each option adds weight to the front end thereby compressing the spring which obviously affects ride height.

Just for argument sake : then with +- .38" I could just as easily argue that SS's could be lower than a Z28 and still be 'technically' correct!

Z28 9.13" +.38 = 9.51" at the J point
SS 9.24" - .38 = 8.86"

As for the bumper guards..... rears are essentially the same so ?? Not likely a DOT thing my guess just for appearance.

Can buy the springs from any local parts store that carries Moog parts, should have them in a day or two for under $100/pr.
