Hey guys,
I was planning my front suspension rebuild and would love to go with a rack and pinion steering setup, mostly to lose a few pounds and clean up under the hood. I like the new kits to swap to the rack but I've been reading that most headers won't clear the steering shaft and/or the rack! My 67 is a bracket racer but I still like to drive it to the Friday night cruise and car show. Does anyone know how to fit Hooker supercomp headers around a Steeroid rack kit? Or any other kit out there? Thanks!

OK, Does anybody run a rack and pinion conversion kit with headers on their 1st gen Camaro? If so, what brand do you run, what's the primary pipe diameter and are they shorties or long tube? Thanks!

I am interested in this also, but I am looking towards swapping to forward steer spindles, that would put the rack in front of the crossmember. I seen it done on muscle car, think he used s10 spindles.

There are a few posts that detail a forward mounted rack unit by an outfit called BRP Steering but they were critical of the kit's quality. I looked at the pictures and while it makes a great looking package and fits real well, you need to do some fabrication and saw a pretty large chunk out of the crossmember to accomodate the steering shaft. I'm looking at Unisteer now. They appear to be the only ones that can fit around my Hooker Super Comp headers.

It's on my list of "things to do" I'm working on the front suspension right now and my subframe is at the body shop as we speak getting repaired and painted. I'm installing Hi-Tech upper and lower control arms and a disc brake conversion kit. When I get those installed, then I'll be able to concentrate on the steering. I'll keep you posted on the results. Do a search on the site for header clearance and you'll find some interesting info. Good Luck down under!

I have a manual unisteer rack, and it fits...but very tight.....I run hedman headers for the 69. I love the rack, but I am going to go back with a power rack and a/c later on......gettin older want a little comfort. It will have to wait though, I am thinking of buying a new house and I need every penny I can get for the down payment....

Do you know which part # for the hedman headers? Also what is the primary pipe diameter. I'm running the 1 3/4 hooker supercomps and I don't really want to change to a smaller pipe diameter as I mainly bracket race my Camaro.
