View Full Version : Looking for my old car - Nor Cal
Road Ragin' Feb 2nd, 08, 10:09 PM I had a '68 Camaro in high school. Sold it after graduation in 1985. For the past 20 years, every time I see a '68 Camaro I do a double take and once-over investigation to see if it is my old one.
I would like to track it down and see if whoever owns it may be willing to part with it.
If anybody in the Bay Area has any leads as to where it is I would greatly appreciate it.
I sold it to a guy in Concord in September of '85. When I sold it, it was black with gold and chrome modular rims. It had a rear spoiler but no front bumper.
Worn-out 3-speed manual tranny, no console, hot 350 from a '77 Corvette that was build by Tri Valley Machine. Had original black CA plates. Plate number VJP994. Wish I still had the VIN; might be easier to track down.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Ron
alanrw Feb 2nd, 08, 10:47 PM According to this site, the car has not had a smog test in Ca. Car sold out of state?

No reason for a '68 to ever be smog tested in CA Alan...
Road Ragin' Feb 2nd, 08, 11:59 PM Back when I sold it, it wasn't exempt and smog was required but pre-75 vehicles have been exempt for several years, now.
ChevyThunder Feb 3rd, 08, 12:08 AM Do you have an old photo you can post ?
3forme Feb 3rd, 08, 06:32 AM Dennis,
I have many smog test reports on my 67 from way back. Smog testing kinda forced my hand to sell 2 Z/28s, got tired of always trying to find that "special" smog station.
Before, the cutoff was "66 and newer" .......I'm sure you remember. Good luck with your search Ron.

That would help...good luck with your quest....:) and BTW welcome to the Team
Vince - you are right, it was late and I was being breif. It could have been tested between '82 and '97 in some counties under "Smog Check". '97 is when '66-'73 was exempted, then we had the rolling 30 and now it pre '76.
I also remember the state run inspection stations for a short while back in the late 70's...
I guess my point was not having a smog inspection record at the BAR site could indicate the car left the state but I would not write it off as such. My old '86 El Camino only goes back to '96, my '69 was owned by the previous owner since the late 80's here in CA and has no inspection record.
Road Ragin' Feb 3rd, 08, 10:57 AM Thanks, everybody. I've been building a '69 Chevelle for the past year and a half and it's been great to see it come together, but you never forget your first love.
I might have some old pictures somewhere but they may be as hard to find as the car itself. 22 years and 8 moves... you know how it goes. I'll see if I can dig them up and post them.
eville Feb 3rd, 08, 10:59 AM Welcome to the site. I'll keep my eyes peeled.
supv26 Feb 3rd, 08, 02:02 PM Concord is where I was born. I lived there until I was 8 and moved to MO in 1970. I have been back to Concord several times, in fact, I spent a week out there in Jan. I am always looking for 1st Gens when I am on the road and if I ever see one like that out there I'll try do investigate.
I have always wondered about the original owner of my '69. Since the privacy act was put into place, doing title history checks makes it almost impossible to do. Years ago I owned a '68 Triumph Spitfire MKIII and was able to track it back to 18 owners! I was able to track it back to an owner in LA but that is where I hit a snag. LA would never respond to my requests for ownership. As for my '69 Camaro I was able to do a registration check on mine but it only showed the guy I purchased it from and that he got it from someone who had it registered in IA.
It would be kind of cool to see who had purchased my '69 Camaro new and see if they would be interested in seeing the condition it is in now. I bet they would never have guessed it has such a good life and gets to stay in a heated and cooled garage!
:hurray:

Fred Mertz Feb 3rd, 08, 02:27 PM I don't believe that "Smog Check" website holds much weight.
I'm looking at a photo of my '68 Z/28 taken in '73. It clearly shows the rear black plate #VND987. According to that website the car now is a Toyota and was last smogged in '97
Yeah! Right!

alanrw Feb 3rd, 08, 04:51 PM Well, with all due respect to any of you who are state employees, it is possible the operator slipped a key that day.
