Gotta love at about 6:00 drag racing in the snow.
Keep an eye out for some big name cars. Eliminator, Jungle Jim, Sox & Martin..... a few more.

gro51 Feb 3rd, 08, 12:12 PM Very cool Brian! I lived in Hampton Bays for several years and went there often. I heard they shut down and now there's a housing complex there? What a shame.
XLexusTech Feb 3rd, 08, 12:37 PM Thanks! Having grown up on LI and raced on that track in the 90's I really appreciate it.
To be honest I had no idea that @ one time the track had some serious events going on.
I was hoping to see a motion car.
Thanks again!
coach420 Feb 3rd, 08, 02:32 PM This is a terrific old video. I raced at NY National Speedway and Westhampton Raceway in the late 60s and early 70s. It was great fun with some nice people. I recall seeing some of those cars race, and the 4 across racing brought back some frightful moments! I must admit that I never went there when there was snow on the ground so those scenes were new for me. A favorite moment was seeing Bill Jenkins defeat Sox & Martin and then load up his truck and drive it out himself. We shared eating donuts with him and his 1 crewmate.
My brother was quite successful at National Speedway in his 1969 GTO Judge having won numerous Eliminator titles, which was the bracket race for all the class winners. I had one of my worst moments at Westhampton when in one race I broke both the spider gears in my "unbreakable" Eaton posi unit and threw the springs out of the clutch diaphram. Luckily I towed my 1971 Z28 to the race that day. NY National had slightly better traction off the line than Westhamption, as I was able to slightly lift the front wheels when dumping the clutch off the line at 7,000 RPMs on the way to an 11:90s run.
67Builder Feb 3rd, 08, 04:57 PM Not being from NY, i find it amazing that in a place with this many folks, there is no place to race legally, locally.
Still hopefull though!
Jerome, i work in Hicksville, and drive past the old plant every day. Some of it has been knocked down, but there's quite a bit that's still there.
Joe, There is a "senior" housing complex there.
LexTech, i think at 4:20 that is a balwin camaro.
At 4:00 i can't tell if that's a 67 pace car.
Coach, Those stories are what i was kind of hoping to hear by posting this here.
Thanks!
Brian
XLexusTech Feb 3rd, 08, 05:11 PM Brian I still have friends on LI. One is still racing. He told me recently that thier was some kind of Motorsports park that was going through various stages of negotation.
Here are som col places to go... Captree state park Sundays They get a few 100 cars.
Bellmore train station same a few 100 on Friday and sat nights.
Not sure if Nthans in oceanside still has things hopping but that is a good list to start with.
I have the opposite problem I am about 20 miles from an IHRA track. My problem s the lack of cars. LI has some great cars and cruise nights.
67Builder Feb 3rd, 08, 05:47 PM The motorsports park seems to take 3 steps forward, and three steps back. I think it will go through if it makes it this year, if it takes any longer, i think it will fall by the wayside.
I go to bellmore all the time. Bald hill is cool in the summer.
The amount of super fast street cars around here is staggering. Watching what classifies as street legal or a daily driver pull up to the cruise in makes me wonder what it takes to be considered too hairy to drive on the street. :)
Of course i'm not complaining. Watching a blown hemi cuda light em up on sunrise highway for the very appreciative audience gives me a happy feeling down deep.
