View Full Version : Whats your feel for the first Gen Pro-Street market?
Yankit Feb 4th, 08, 10:50 AM Have an opportunity to buy a 69 Camaro RS Pro-Street car and am not sure what the markets like on them? I know they were a hot thing years ago but is there still a following to speak of? My thought is they generally have got lots of money invested in them and the guy whom built them is selling it for 25 cents on the dollar when he gets rid of it, and they usually have some killer parts invested in them.... Any thoughts guys? Thx

The market seems cyclical for pro-streets. It is definitely better, and MUCH cheaper to buy one then to build one. Ive seen and heard when you build, you typically get $.50-$.75 for every dollar you have invested and thats if your lucky!
If you can get one relatively cheap, and plan on keeping it, go for it!!
If you are planning on flipping, I would steer away (literally) from making the purchase. They can be very difficult to unload!
Just my thoughts
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Feb 4th, 08, 02:13 PM I am building a Pro-Street and me personally think they are for the first gen bringing $1 for $1 depending the quality of the build. If you like Pro-Street and it is built by a reparable chassis guy I wouldn't hesitate, unless you can build it yourself. I have about $50,000 in mine and the only thing I have left to pay for is exhaust and a front end alignment. All the work you see in the photos is done by me with the exception of building the motor.

So let me ask you, do you feel someone then would step up and pay you $50K or more for your car actual cash hundred dollar bills on your hood when its completed? The car is beautiful don't get me wrong and I love it-its got a great look, but what I'm afraid is when and if you were to put it up on the market it may only bring $35K hard real money or are you finding the market will still support the higher bucks for the car?

No.

Thank you Ed, its been a hard 2 1/2 years but I think I can see the light at the end of the tunel.I'll post some new pics with some progress soon.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Feb 4th, 08, 03:54 PM You may have to wait but I think they [the first gen that is] will bring the money if the car is done right. This is why I did my ,own as for Mark he could have said[I don't think so instead of just NO.] You just have to find the right guy and you may be the guy for a Pro- Street. Me personally I'm not into the PT look or stock, sure a matching #s car is gonna be more profitable but you have to want that look.I guess I just like the look of a big tire car.You have got to admit even big tires on an omni looks better than a stock omni. I don't know if this is comparing apples to apples but you get the point.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Feb 4th, 08, 03:56 PM OH YEAH GO PRO-STREET, Thats my job and I'm sticking to it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a pro street car and speak from experience. You'll get alot ot talkers and tire kickers but when it comes down to brass tacks you won't get out of what you have in it. In my experience everybody and I mean everybody even the guys that know cars want to buy at your loss.
DougP Feb 5th, 08, 05:46 AM OH YEAH GO PRO-STREET, Thats my job and I'm sticking to it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Being a former "pro streeter" myself (see pic below) there will always be a soft spot in my heart for a Pro Street car
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i86/dparks69/My%20Pro%20Street%20Nova/side.jpg
Go get 'em Dave -- I'm with ya! :beers: :beers: -- if I get a second toy at some point in the future, it will probably be another pro streeter
IMO Pro street cars have a market that is out of the public eye for the most part and sell for less than what it costs to build one. 1st gens tend to do better market wise than other models and if the car is show quality top and bottom they do sell for decent money. IMO it's about the about the quality on a pro street. Fall and winter is the time to be looking/buying. To build one can be a a bigger money pit than a rust bucket being put back to show condition :D
My money pit:

PROZ11 Feb 5th, 08, 06:11 AM I built my Pro Street Camaro because it's want I wanted to build. I don't know if I will get every dime I have put in it back if I sell it. In most cases, not just Pro Street cars, it's cheaper to buy a car already "done" than to start from scratch and build one. But I didn't build this (or any other car I've done) to try to turn a profit. A lot of people will tell you you'll never get your money back on a Pro Street car. That's what everyone told me about my last Pro Street build (57 Chevy). And, yes, there are a lot of tire kickers and talkers when you go to shows or cruise nights. But, when I did sell the car, I got a few grand more then I had put into it. I guy came up to me at a show and made me an offer (the car wasn't actually for sale). I had received a lot of dead offers on the car before so I didn't think much of it. But a few days later he handed over his offer in cash. More then I had in the car. So it all depends on the car, the buyer and the quality of work. A lot of people say "Pro Street is dead." I have to tell you, when I take my car out for a ride it sure doesn't seem that way. The car is a huge hit when ever I take it out for a cruise. It's not 100% done so I haven't taken it to any shows or cruise spots. But I will be done with it this spring.

Pro-Street69Camaro468 Feb 5th, 08, 03:23 PM Good looking stock 70 Camaro you have here. This is the kind of stock that I like to see. Tim started a good post here this almost like having a forum for Pro Street.Tim if it were me If you like the car I'd buy it you may regret it if you don't.
Yankit Feb 5th, 08, 09:15 PM Well the story goes, I bought a 69 Z/28 that was used as a Pro-bracket race car since the 70's, convienced the guy to sell it as a roller with out the 427 powerglide he had in it because I obviously wanted to restore the car back to a Z/28 with an extra DZ302 I had laying around. So the car arrives and is set up so sweet I end putting a motor in it and go racing myself! Suppose to be a one time thing-ya right! Had a blast that season but over the winter went ahead and started the restoration and so now I'm missing my hot rod 69 play toy at the track. The Pro-Street cars seem to be a great bang for the buck if you buy one after someone else has taken a bath investing there blood, sweet and hard earn cash into it and then they sell it for what ever reason for what seem to be .25 to .50 cents on the dollar if there lucky? I just don't want to get stuck or barried in it myself because like others this seems like a good idea now and then I get it and get board with it or want something else and need to sell it and don't want to be on the also loosing end of the deal like the builder just so I can be loud and obnoxious at the cruis'ins and burn up some tires at the track.... I can forward pictures of the car I'm looking to buy if someone will post them for me? Thx in advance...

Pro-Street69Camaro468 Feb 6th, 08, 01:51 PM Tim, This is a Nice liking Pro-Street I would prefer it as is, but if it is a real Z-28 it may be worth your while to put it back to original if you can find every thing and not go to far out with cost.I heard of a guy here in Maryland that bought a 67 RS/SS that was supposed to be a real rare piece and was changing it from a drag car back to original but when its complete its supposedly going to be worth $350,000. I heard he paid $15,000 just for the vin tag and the title. He is also writing a book about this and some other interesting facts about Camaro history. This I think will be a hard feat to take from a drag car back to original if this is your plans.
Yankit Feb 6th, 08, 01:54 PM Ok guys, this is what were here for and the question of the day; Whats it worth?? It has a 468 big block all chromed & polished goodies, TCI TH400, 4.56 9" ford with 4 wheel disc brakes, alston chassic I believe in the back half, nice paint and stock interior-no cage which I like! What'a ya think??? Thanks again Mark for posting the pictures!
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Feb 6th, 08, 03:49 PM I think I'd go $41,000 based on the pics if the paints real nice, and low miles on the motor. Is it a totally stock sub frame if some after market may get a little more.Hows the engine bay this may raise the price. There again some one at a local car show may go $50,000 if they want it bad enough. If I had it all to do again I would just buy one if the build was from reputable builder
XLexusTech Feb 6th, 08, 05:24 PM By the looks of your current inventory it looks like a good idea. Nice thing to round out the stable
bigdave33 Feb 6th, 08, 06:33 PM Tim,
looks like a neat car , I purchased a 69 Z exdrag car a few years ago and put it back to stock . Required alot of time and money , I had more fun with the car as a pro-streeter . but I did get a good deal on car so I still made a few bucks . I sold it to a dealer now it is a low mile #'s matching car ???
1969ProStreetCamaro Feb 6th, 08, 07:02 PM I believe that prices on first generation ProStreets are a reflection of the fact that there are so many of them out there(which isn't a bad thing) and that in turn tends to keep prices lower than anticipated. As an example, you own 2 Pro Street cars...one is a first generation F-body, the other, a 1958 Plymouth Fury Pro Street. Equal money is invested in both cars, you will get more for the Fury because the prospective buyer of the F-body will tell you" I know where there are 5 more just like this one for $xxx dollars less than what you want for yours".Now let that same buyer prove to you that he can find the same amount of 1958 Plymouth Fury ProStreets and then try to offer you less money for it. That won't happen.
BTW, since everyone else is showin' their rides, here's mine........

No maybe you misunderstood, this car pictured is just a Pro-Street I'm looking to purchase to replace the 69 Z/28 race car that I'm currently already in process restoring back to original (well kinda sorta original/Pro-touring) anyway this car pictured I don't believe is a coded anything car, just something fun to have and ad to the inventory as someone mentioned in this thread.....

Yankit(Tim)
I really like that car. I like it because it is similar to mine in respect to things like the interior i.e. Factory console, dash is still intact with factory speedo. It's kinda like a ProStreet/RestoMod. I would buy it if I didn't already own one:D:yes:
prostreet69camaro Feb 7th, 08, 02:52 PM I think the car is worth 35/40K. We dont know what condition the motor is in. It needs a little interior work. I like the stance of the car and the RS frontend. It is a nice car. The interior might be noisy with the aluminum tubs.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Feb 7th, 08, 03:38 PM First off David senior tech this is a car that is of interest to me ,and a very nice car anymore pics posted any where.
Tim, Now I understand what your getting at and now I'm wandering, have you made the guy an offer or does he have aprice tag on it.What you gonna do and how much if you dont mind me asking I'm currious now.Keep us posted on what you decide.

I know I could own the car for $35K, but I just feel like maybe thats all these cars will be worth no matter how nice they are and ofcourse I'd want to change a few things so theres more money into it which come sell time doesn't really make good sense, yes I'd love to have it and can see myself cruis'in and dragging it this summer but financially probably not the right move for me because I know I'll get tired out it or the grass will be green elsewhere and I'll want to dump it and I'll be stuck to deep in it I'm afraid is why I've brought up this thread to get your guys thoughts......

camarodude67 Feb 7th, 08, 06:40 PM Hi Tim, Yes me and a friend of mine owned this car a few years back, it is for sale here in CT. This car is sick. 9.9 1/4 mile car. Scary. It is a 69 427 14.1 compression.
It was fun but expensive for the upkeep, gas killed us for cam2 and a 7 gallon tank of gas... Make sure you by a pump gas setup.... And make sure the car is safe! 800HP watch out!
http://www.cars-on-line.com/31543.html
I posted this car a few years ago here on Camaros.net
Later Tim.
The car was hard to sell..... But I can vouch for this one if any one is interested. Fyi it is a real RS/SS.
I can explain the whole history of it.... The original owner took the SS Hood, RS Grill, Disk Brakes to lighten up the car for drag racing. Check out the RS wiper motor and reverse lights, DOH!
Later

68IslTeal Feb 8th, 08, 06:44 AM So0 many cars floating around in this thread...
Is the car pictured belows the pro-street you are looking at Tim? Car look nice, does not look to far gone into the pro-street direction that one could not switch trends with the car if they so choose (and not pay out the nose). I like pro-streets like this, and think they still hold some appeal to alot of people. The ones I could pass on are the big tunnel rammed/roots blower, chromed engine and compartment, etc...
I think 34.9 is a solid price and has potential for fun or redesign.

Hi 68IslTeal, the car I'm interested to purchase is the one that "PROZ11" listed for me on the second page of this thread (thank you Mark for doing that again by the way!) I guess thats the thing I like about it is that it isn't over the top to crazy, I see some that theres so much motor sticking out of the hood (a littles good but above the roof line??)I can't believe anyone could safely drive it ect... This car is basically a very nice stock appearing RS car with some big ol' meats in the back, nice BBC and updated 4 wheel disc brake running gear and no cage. It won't be probably to legal for the track depending upon how quick it is but an impressive around town car to cruise and have fun....
1969ProStreetCamaro Feb 8th, 08, 12:42 PM Ok. I will post some pics for you later. I'll have to upload them, then I'll post them here. BTW, your Pro Street Camaro is very nice as well:yes:
.......more pics for you David..Since this pic was taken I have installed the brake pedal cover.

I had a rear seat made the fits flush between the wheel tubs.I had it stitched with the Jaz seat cover pattern to match.

This pic is before the repaint. I didn't like the black grille so it was painted silver.

pro70z28 Feb 8th, 08, 12:58 PM This is sparking my interest you got to post some more pics. Are you doing the work.
Yup, I'm building it from scratch. This is what it looked like when I bought it. It was a mini tubbed car then but it was NOT done well at all so I just started over.

Looks like your doing it right, this is about what mine looked like when I started. Its fun sometime but others I feel like selling it.
prostreet69camaro Feb 8th, 08, 03:11 PM I have had my car together for 15 years. I drove it with different small blocks in it then decided it was time for the blower motor. I had fun with the small block but whenever I pulled in to a show with the blower motor everybody is looking. Once you have a blower motor you wont go back. Yes is a little hard looking around the blower but that is why my wife rides shotgun. LOL Plus she likes it too. That is her sitting behind it.
pro70z28, your car is looking good. You have come a long way from the original pictures.
1969prostreetcamaro, I like flames. Nice car
David Calligan, get back to work on your car. LOL

skyman51 Feb 8th, 08, 04:26 PM Have an opportunity to buy a 69 Camaro RS Pro-Street car and am not sure what the markets like on them? I know they were a hot thing years ago but is there still a following to speak of? My thought is they generally have got lots of money invested in them and the guy whom built them is selling it for 25 cents on the dollar when he gets rid of it, and they usually have some killer parts invested in them.... Any thoughts guys? Thx
IMHO if you buy it for 25 cents on the dollar that is what it is worth. If you want a hot rod,buy it,but if you want a real deal you get what you pay for and it will go up in value, the pro street won't. If you are talking about spending 20-30K no big deal. If it is more then that it is a waste of good money.

Yankit Feb 9th, 08, 10:43 AM No offense 1969CamaroProStreet was intended toward you as far as my comment of motor sticking out of the hood height or anyone in paticular on this website for that matter. I was just stating my own personal preference for wanting the Pro Street look with out the excessive motor sticking out of the hood. Heres a perfect example on ebay of what I'm talking about and the cars done beautifully just not my taste; http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-Camaro-RS-Z28-Tube-Chassis-Blown-Pro-Street_W0QQitemZ150213036805QQcmdZViewItem?hash=it em150213036805 I just want something to be a little more practical if thats possible when were talking Pro-Streets!

Tim,
No offense taken. Like I said I enjoyed my car for about 12 years with the small block and it was real reliable too. It took me a while to figure out the blower motor and I still have some problems overheating sitting in traffic in the Texas summer weather. I have a link from mequirs on a 70ish GTO with 2 blowers stacked on top of each other. I cant see how he can drive it. It actually runs and sounds bada$$.
