View Full Version : Daughter wrecked her car today.

Well, the snow got her (or her driving:)). My daughter lost control of her car coming down a hill and ended up taking out two street signs, hopping over a curb, hitting a car then hitting the overhead door of the garage that is attached to the house where the car was parked. Five feet to the right, and she goes over a 20 foot drop off into a ravine in back of the house.

Now, why do I tell this story? Well, the owner of the house and her friend (the car was the friends car, not the home owners) both popped out of the house to see the commotion. I get a call at work (10 miles away) and so does my wife. These two ladies, in the meantime take my daughter into the house to calm her down and make sure she is ok. When I get there, my daughter is outside looking at her car (not a total, but not going to repair). I'm standing there in a driving snow, and this lady comes outside with four cups of hot chocholate for her, my wife and my daughter. The cop is writing the ticket and I am giving the car owner our insuranc information. We had a nice little discussion about how many times other drivers have missed this turn in the road, ending up in the homeowners yard. The cop wraps up his work, we shake hands with the homeowner and the car owner, and we leave.

I was amazed at how cool these two individuals were with us and our daughter. My daughter really is a good driver and made a huge error in judgement. What could have been a much worse experience was made into a situation where it was hard to leave feeling bad.

My daughter is sore, but more shaken than anything.

Just wanted to give public kudos to two individuals that are seemingly just two really nice people in our community.

Nice lesson, nice people, and especially nice no one was hurt. Tangible property can be repaired.

Intangible property, daughter's feelings of remembering the incident, it will always be on her mind.

Glad to hear your daughter is okay

Now go have her make a big batch of cookies for the nice people she was fortunate enough to have 'run-into' ;)

I donated one of my daughter's wrecks to the local fire dept. for "Jaws-of-Life" practice - $1k tax deduction and it may save one of our lives in the future ...

Geesh....
The people being nice took away the frustration of what just happened and that will ease the pain. Glad nobody was hurt. I hope she wasn't given a ticket.

She received a ticket, but not sure what the ticket was for. 75.00 and a lesson learned. The cop, unfortunately, was the only one in this situation that wasn't on par with what was happening. After my daughter had her accident, a salt truck was dispatched to the hill, and the hill was scraped to the pavement and salted. Shortly after (according to the homeonwner), the cop witnessed a few cars come over the hill, and stop with little trouble, and commented to my daughter, "See, they aren't having any trouble stopping." Funny thing is, the cop is the one that called the salt truck to the scene. But, we wren't letting an off-hand remark by a cop take away from the fact that the people that were "actually" affected by this accident were able to remain civilized about it.

I'd much preferred the cop keep his yap shut, take the report, write the ticket and move an about his business. He isn't the one that is going to pay higher insurance rates and absorb the cost of getting the car fixed, or replacing the car. But, he had to get his little jab in there for whatever reason, and if it made him feel better to make an 18 year old girl feel even worse for her mistake, then more power to him.

My daughter is alive, the homeowners were cool, we drove the car home and in the final analysis, one cop's pissy attitude is his to own.

Craig....

I would fight the ticket. She did nothing wrong to create the accident so its worth fighting to keep future insurance costs down for her/you . Maybe he was mad that he didn't get a hot chocolate :)

I think we might fight it. Can tickets be increased if we lose?

Craig...
I have never heard of ticket prices being raised but there are slight costs involved in a ticket dispute..like $25.00 here in Massachusetts. The insurance fees involved with the ticket make it well worth fighting. Contact the local DMV to inquire what fees are charged for ticket dispute.

I'm not here to defend the cop, BUT you know what? On a day like you're describing all he does is chase accidents one after another. They tend to lose their sense of compassion/ humor in a hurry. If he called the plow/salt truck I might well fight it.
My daughter had a slight fender bender the 2nd day she had her license. She was backing out of a parking spot and just scratched the car next to her. She had seen the woman get out of the car before she started backing out and upon hitting her car immediately hopped out and went to tell her. The woman kept saying don't worry, it's an old car. My daughter was so upset that the woman had to call my wife and explain the situation. She felt bad for my daughter.
Long story short, she refused to give my daughter her name and phone number. She was new in town and kept saying forget it. I wanted to give her a gift certificate to a steak house in town for her and her husband just for being so compassionate to my daughter but I couldn't. Some people truly are nice.
I was also actually proud of my daughter for being responsible in the situation and not just trying to sneak away.

I get it that cops get frenzied on days like these. But, he is a professional, and when you are dealing with a freaked out 18 year old (girl or boy), his atitude should be one of understanding and consideration for the situation.

Thank god the individuals who should have been upset were able to diffuse the situation, allowing cooler heads to prevail. We plan to send them something for their understanding. :)

I agree with you 100%. They (cops) should be cool in these situations but they often aren't. That is why I said I was not defending his attitude. I agree on the gift for the ladies involved. They will have an impact on your daughter's outlook in bad situations for the rest of her life. Very good role models for stressful times.
