View Full Version : 69 Z28 Speedo Cable
alanrw Feb 7th, 08, 11:39 AM Does anyone know why the cable exits to the right of the steering column? I read that that was unique to the Z28's. Why would it have been different compared to say an SS? And when they say it is to the right is that inboard or outboard of the steering column?

Daytona Yellow 69 Z/28 Feb 7th, 08, 01:20 PM Alan,
They exit by the tunnel close to where the throttle arm pivots. The reason they come out there is because the speedo cable attachs to the Muncie on the passenger side. To my understanding, any first gen that came factory with a Muncie exits in this same spot.
I hope this helps,
alanrw Feb 7th, 08, 01:24 PM So then this is not an exclusive demarcator of a 69Z. So an SS with a muncie would have the same exit point.
If SS's didn't come with muncies, I apologize before I am corrected :)

Right.

A 4 speed SS would be the same as a Z/28. An automatic SS would not. They probably put in the right side of the column for a Muncie car because the speedo cable attached to the right side of the tranny. Shorter cable = smaller $$ and a more direct routing.
alanrw Feb 7th, 08, 02:00 PM So at the end of the day, if you see a Z car with the speedo exiting to the left, it is not a real Z.

sspecialk Jul 6th, 08, 05:18 PM Hey guys on this exit location issue I got another question. I am doing a conversion of an automatic car to the Muncie 4-speed. I am looking on my firewall and see the general area where you guys suggest this hole should go. First off if anyone has ever done this to a car that has no hole does it go where the dimple is? If so what is the dimension of this hole. I think I see the dimple where the clip most likely goes as well. Just to the center of the car from where the bigger hole will be. Anyway any input is apprecited before I go drilling any holes.
alanrw Jul 6th, 08, 06:22 PM I think the AIM shows you where the hole should go.

sspecialk Jul 6th, 08, 06:43 PM I looked in the AIM I have and it really did not show a good detail of the area. I was mainly curious if the dimple is to be the center of the hole. If you happen to have the section or page handy in the AIM maybe I jsut have not found the right diagram yet.
Fred Mertz Jul 6th, 08, 06:55 PM There is a dimple to mark the center of the hole. If you are going to drill a hole with the motor in the car, you will probably end up with an oval hole because of the angle you have to use. I did when I drilled mine. The grommet on the cable still fits in the hole just fine.
If I remember right the hole size is just under an inch. The AIM will have that info.
Unreal Jul 6th, 08, 07:09 PM An alternative to drilling an oval hole is to get a greenlee hole punch. They're on ebay all the time for < $20.
sspecialk Jul 6th, 08, 07:31 PM THanks for the info. I am fortunate to not have the engine in the car right now so I should be able to drill a nice round hole. I will look back through and see if I can locate the proper size. I was going to try and use the original speedo hole but it seems best that I do it right so I will be happy with the results. Thanks again for the help.
chuck69ss Jul 10th, 08, 09:06 AM I thought that the ASM was pretty clear. I don't have it in front of me but it is something like 7/8" or 1". I used a knock out punch from harbour freight (low cost version of Greenlee). It made a nice clean hole exactly as specified and the grommet fit perfectly. You just need to drill a pilot hole at the dimple on the firewall and enlarge until it's big enough for the punch.
JohnZ Jul 12th, 08, 06:42 PM It's a 1" hole - see UPC 0, Sheet A9, item 8A. Item 8B is the clip holes.
sspecialk Jul 22nd, 08, 01:33 PM I got my cable in. I drilled a 1" hole and it fit like a glove. Currently I have 2 of the clips in place and I think I will add the third one in the middle. The cable has a bit of a sag in it without it there. Other than that it looks good and worked out fine. Hooray I am about ready to install the engine and trans. FINALLY
