How can you verify a 69 muncie was the correct " numbers matching" trans for the car? I was told the same trans (660 case) were used on multiple cars. Is there a way to confirm it was for a camaro?

To be number's matching it should have the car's VIN number stamped into the casting.

Did all 69's come with the VIN stamped? I am asking because a guy has a muncie for sale and is claiming it is for a 69 camaro... Any way to verify it is actually for a camaro?

Will something in the VIn indicate it is actually from a camaro?

Thanks for any help.

Get the numbers ( a photo would be better ) off it and post them here. Somebody will be able to tell you what it was from.

If it's for a 69 Norwood Camaro, the VIN stamp will start with 19N, and then the last 6 numbers of the VIN of the car it came out of. It'll look something like 19N635248. If it is out of a Van Nuys built car, it'll be simialr except the stamping will start with 19L instead of 19N. These things can be restamped, so as mentioned, best to post a picture and let the experts decide. :beers:

Thanks Brian. That is exactly what I was looking for.
I dont have the trans yet, traveling today to go look at it. The guy runs a resto shop and he is meeting me there so I dont have the numbers yet. If I do get it , I will post the numbers and pics to get some opinions.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

I got the numbers back from the guy .. First off I found it is not a muncie... Tells me the one in the pic is not the actual trans.. Pictured was aluminum case, actual is steel...'Not a big deal right?" he says..:sad:

Glad i didnt drive out to see it..

I cant find anything to tell me what it is though..Now I am just curious...

MC- GM 3925568
SC- 313982647
Tail- 32668 L147

Any ideas what this is???

A steel case is probably a Saganaw tranny which is a weak transmission. Maybe someone else on here can identify it by the numbers.

All the Muncies were aluminum cased as far as I know. The tail shaft number of L147 sounds like a date code. L= December, 14 means the 14th, and the 7 is either 57, 67, 77, etc. I'm leaning towards 57 since it is a steel case, although I am not an expert on it. At least you didn't burn $3.25 gas to go look at it, huh?
Also, the tail shaft for a 69 Camaro will be 3857584. It has the speedo cable coming out of the right side of it. This can be changed out easily, so factor that in if you do find a 19N or 19L trasmission out there and it has the wrong tail shaft housing on it..
